The top of the slide is cut out to drive weight and achieve better balance, but the barrel is not ported.

Farmer, a 34C is ported. As Paul said:

It's cut out to make the slide weigh the same as the slide on a 17, so that the same recoil spring may be used.

As for choices, I'd go with the 17, more holsters, and if you don't mind holster choices sucking, go with Squib Joe's choice: 17L.

I'd go with the Beretta 92 then. Hard to mess with what works.

I was unfortunate to have to carry a 92 for a number of years. I know a lot of folks are fans, but I personally hated everything about it.

It typically is a love/hate relationship with it.

In 02 I was considering much the same thing. I went with the 17. Same as what was issued to US Customs and I was trying to get in with them. Hearing loss prevented that from happening.

The little hiccup they had with the slide rails drove me away from glock. Not so much a bad pistol, but the customer service over that ticked me off to the company.

I would chose the G17 - I have been shooting the same one since 1992!

I have both, and 9/10 G17 holsters work just fine, sometimes the barrel stick out 3/4"

Paul, I thought I convinced you already.... My Jedi mind tricks not working?

don't own those model glocks but i have/had XD45's in tactical, full size, compact and sub. all with lights on them at one point for whatever purpose.

i have always preferred the 5.5" barrel tactical model to the full size. balances much better for me and my follow up shots are tighter. can give accuracy out over 15 yds, but not enough where it's like "wow - look at that!!!"

i'd give the standard advice - shoot 'em both side by side. see what works better for YOU. what other test do you need?

if you start buying opinions around here i'll be the first in line and you'll be broke pretty quick

One concern I have about the 34 is the adjustable rear sights. On a defensive pistol I prefer the more durable fixed sights.

Other than that, I see no reason not to carry a G34 over the G17, particularly if concealment is not an issue. Even then, with an IWB holster and/or proper outer garments, the extra barrel length shouldn't be a problem.
