Have you seen some of the models that have come out in recent years?
Some don't have the red/orange tip and the only way to tell is the seam or diameter at the end of the barrel.
An officer is not going to wait for another second warning if a realistic gun starts coming up or over.

I do not know if it was a stock image or an actual photo of the pellet gun in question, but a different article showed one of those pellet guns w/out the colored tip.
