upcomming 3 gun match

Postby J.Schmitt on Tue Jan 31, 2012 10:19 am

We are gearing up for another year of 3 gun shooting. SCAPSA in conjunction with MN3GunGroup will again host our first match of the season on --MARCH 3-- at 0930 hours. Get it on your calenders. Updates found on facebook and MN3GunGroup.org. Then on --MARCH 17-- Gopher Rifle will host their Tactical Shotgun match. A second 3 gun is in the works for early April.

Where will these take place and how do they differ from DMG matches?

Deadarrow,
Here are some main differences:
- MN3gungroup hosts USPSA/IPSC type 3 gun matches. More rounds(100 rifle, 100 shotgun, 100 pistol), more targets, sometimes longer distances(they shot out to 400 yards last year at MGFC).
- In particular, if they have shotgun stages, you will load your shotgun way more than DMG. There is no silly 12 round shotgun limit to a stage. You will want more shotgun shell caddies for sure.
- USPSA/IPSC type rules for engaging targets as opposed to IDPA type rules that are enforced in IDPA DMG; e.g. NO cover/concealment, NO 'slicing the pie', Ok to drop a loaded mag.
- The gun divisions are similar to DMG, although they add Heavy metal divisions for the .308s and an Open class.

I would suggest going to their website at mn3gungroup.org and checking out the rules there. That will show you the subtle differences in loaded mag limits and gun divisions.

If you like DMG, you will find these 3 gun matches quite the experience. Triple the rounds, probably triple the intensity.

I'm definetly in for the match at SCAPSA. If you are considering going, I would strongly urge you to attend one of these matches. The MN3-Gun Group does a great job setting these up. It's too much fun to miss out on.

I have never shot DMG but understand that it is a good time as well. Come on out with the gear you have and I am sure you will find another fun shooting sport to participate in.

Hope to see you there Dutch. It was fun to be squadded with you at the last match. So you going to be weilding the mighty Dessert Eagle again? You're one of the few guys that can shoot one and make it look like a normal size pistol. It was funny, after the last 3-Gun, I was picking up brass and heard someone make the comment "who was using the revolver" :)

Just saying folks don't generaly associate .357 mag brass with an autoloader. Which was what happened in this case. Don't see a lot of DE's or Coonan's being run for 3-gun, that's what makes it awesome.

Yeah. I understood. ;) You may see the occasional revolver, too.

LOL.... I wouldn't want to use anything else. I also have the 44 and the 50 but I don't like leaving my brass behind for those.
I learned alot in december's match. My metric 30 round FAL mags are good up to 25 rounds in my inch FAL.
I didn't think about where to keep my 12Ga ammo....

Also exchanged the muzzle device and tested it last sunday and added a reddot on top of the Burris MTAC.
Obviously nobody has to worry about last place, because I'm claiming it, but hey, for me it's about having fun which requires at least 308 and 357.
And on top of that, you learn about yourslef, your equipment and circumstances. Can't beat that.

But I have to admit: I checked out "heavy metal". If I ditch the dot on the rifle (only 1 optic) and get a bunch of 44 magazines.... I'm getting an itch for that.

Even though it has been a nice winter, I am still itching to get the guns out and dust them off. This match should be a good time.

Shooter 115 - congrats on the new little shooter.

Thanks Payne,
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it too, especially since I'll be running a new rifle and shotgun this year. Be fun to get them out and see how they work in actual competition, though I'm pretty confident I have all the bugs worked out. Thanks to the weather this winter, I don't think a week has gone by where I didn't get out and zing a few down range. I was out at the range Saturday and Sunday and blew through over 250 rounds between rifle and pistol.
