i want a new rifle scope for my deer gun....

i'm leaning to Leupold. i don't want to go cheap with a Burris, but i don't want to break the bank with a Schmidt & Bender either. any suggestions? the rifle is a Ruger M77 pre-hawkeye in .270 WIN. currently it's wearing a Weaver 4x with a 30mm objective. i think i want a 40mm or bigger next, to allow for more light to come in. however, i'm borderline retarded when it comes to glass.

Honestly, 20 years ago I would have said Leupold was a lot better than most. But in the last 10 years the others have really stepped up and Leupold has slipped a bit. For hunting I'd go Bushnell or Sightron.

For a hunting rifle in .270, I would either get a Zeiss conquest 3-9 variable, a Leupold 3-9 variable or a Nikon 3-9 variable. all are (to me) middle of the road price wise and should work well. I think the glass quality is Zeiss- Nikon- Leupold. Leupold however is probably the best in the industry as far as warrantee and is made in the US. Nikon, I have had some issues with how well they hold up, but that should not be an issue with a .270.

A 40 mm objective should be fine. 50mm is more than you need.

Tried quite a few middle ground scopes and have always been happy with Leupold. In the last couple of years I have been mounting Nikon Monarchs and have been very satisfied with them. It's just me, but I think most people over scope their rifles, so I am fan of the 2-7X or 2-8X power range.

You'd be doing yourself a major disservice if you didn't look long and hard at the Redfield Revolution line. I can't see much of a difference between it and my Leup. VXII.

What kind of terrain do you hunt? Wide open spaces? Probably want lots of magnification, maybe 3-9. Forest? Quick, maybe just a red dot or holo. Some of each? I love my Trijicon 1-4. When I'm walking thru the woods, I keep it on 1 for the snap shots. When things open up I dial it up to 4. I sighted it in at 200 yards and it holds a nice tight group. I have a similar Nitrolon scope on another gun, at a significantly lower price point. Swarofski has a 1-8 which would be great, but it's a little rich for my budget.

ok, so i'm actually looking at the VX-3 Leupold in 2.5-8x36mm configuration. i figure that's a decent enough size, but i'd like a 40 for the objective size. like i said, let's let in some more light, ya dig? field of view is going to be an improvement as well. i'm not seeing much of anything in a 40mm size that's LESS than a 3-9x scope. if i have to go with a 3-9, it's not the end of the world, but i'd like the 2-7 more. hell, i'd rather shy away from the 2.5-8x, because those magnifications are so similar to the 3-9x, i'd probably not be able to tell the difference.

as far as the Zeiss, those (from what i've seen) are pretty nice scopes. i never thought they were as affordable as i've noticed. i'm not a big fan of Nikon for some reason. my old Nikon 35mm camera is beyond awesome, but that's a camera. not a rifle scope. i think i'll look at the Nikons, but i'll still probably shy away from them

i typically hunt in wooded areas, with wide spaces. i like swamps and marshes and such. plant my stand about 20" up, and i can see for days. for the close stuff, i won't think of shouldering my rifle, that's what my .357 is for.

I don't think you would notice much difference between a Leupold VXII, or VXIII. They are solid performers for the money. The Nikon Monarch line probably has a little bit better lenses in that same price range. If you are on a budget, and not stuck on a name, take a look at the Nikko Sterling scopes if you can find one. They are very high quality, made in Japan, but not very well known around here.

I love my Nikon Monarch 4x16x42mm w paralax adjustment even ranging is easy. Pretty good glass too with about 95% light transfer. And for the money you can't beat it. Bump anyone?
