Dating a Handgun

Postby Hammered Squirrel on Tue Feb 28, 2012 1:12 pm

So my dad got a Colt .32 NP from his uncle that belonged to his Grandpa... The question that I have is can anybody point me in the direction of a website that can tell me when is was made?

Serial # is 46XXX

Thanks in advance

he's good, that's how. Joe has been dating and appraising guns for quite a while

I'm not an expert but the serial number, markings/stampings, patent dates, configuration, name are all part of narrowing down the overall date range of a model. Then the individual parts can play a role dividing early/late production if there were differences during a model's production. There are books with this sort of information, like the Blue Book of Gun Values. Sorry, I don't own a copy or I'd look up the valuations for you. :geek:

Thanks guys!

We were racking our brains to try and figure out when it was manufactured.

I'm assuming by valuations you mean what she's worth?

Its ok not to know for me on this, family rule is that once the gun is in the family it doesn't leave... unless its an absolute piece of $h!#.

That would be 1901

Dates are coming from John D. Breslin's Variations Of Colt's and Rick Sapp's Standard Catalog of Colt Firearms

You might also consider paying for a factory letter which would give date and possibly shipping info and more for your gun. Runs about 100 bucks
