Automobile rust repair/paintwork?

Postby 45Badger on Fri Mar 30, 2012 6:33 am

Yikes! I found rust on my truck  It's a 2004 Chevy Silverado with about 100K miles on it, in decent shape and should have a lot of life left in it. The rust spots are all down low (rocker panels?). Anybody recommend a good and cheap/fair/inexpensive/reasonable solution? Thanks!

I used Chucks body shop on 1309 E. 66th street in Richfield. Kinda old school one man operation, was reasonable. Roughly across the street from the "Frenchman's"

Master collision by the car wash in Chanhassen close to your house.

I have similar rust spots that just showed up on my '05 Jeep Liberty. What is the ballpark for having something like that taken care of?

It's terminal. Free up some of that cash you've amassed and stimulate this economy. Cheap bastard.

I have used this.. http://www.por15.com/ I used the blackcote spray can.

Normally mine is not only underneath but also rising a little on the wheel wells. I take my electric sander and sand it flat (if bubbled) While you pick that up at your local automotive store check what color you have on your car (there will be a color code on the door) pick up a touch up paint you can get them in two sizes small and really small. After the blackcote dries paint and after a good waxing and washing later it blends very well.

If you are using POR 15, you need to paint it on oxidation, or it won't adhere all that much better than regular paint, so if you sand it clean, you've got to use a wash that includes oxides (like Metal Prep by the same company that makes POR-15).

Badger? Don't you have like a covenant or something in your neighborhood that prohibits old rusty pieces of ****?

Seriously, time to cast that antique off to someone younger and less financially secure than you.

I would not be caught dead living in/with HOA restrictions.

That's why I have teenagers ;) and it helps me maintain my inner hillbilly 8-)

If your trying to embrace your inner Hilly Billy I really think you should head down to Northern Tool and get a DIY bed liner kit. Paint it all the way up to the bottom of the trim strip on the doors. It will look real classy!
