Guy at Cabela's today.

Postby AndrewGrant on Fri May 11, 2012 8:39 pm

I went to cabelas after work to buy some range ammo for my Taurus TCP. Im just casually looking at the selection and i see out of the corner of my eye one of the "Gun guys" who works there. He proceded to grill me on ammo and why i shouldnt buy hollowpoints for my .380 (didnt ask for his angry opinion) and asked why i wanted to buy ammo today and i told him that i was just looking to buy some to break in the new Taurus and how i was waiting on my carry permit. He then flies off the hangle about how awful Taurus is and how all their guns are made in South America and everyone hes ever owned (which apparently was everyone one of them) was a piece of crap. I informed him that many are now made in Miami and he just wouldnt believe it and looked at me like i was clueless.

I tend to have a lot of patience for people like this.

To top it off he starts asking me what sort of hearing protection i use at the range and i told him i use ear plugs. He flies off the handle and tells me that i am going to go deaf and tries to sell me a 50 dollar headset ad a box of earplugs. I calmly turned around and walked away.

I have never had an experience like this at that store and it has left me kind of sour.

A know-it-all commando, wonderful folks to deal with, sounds like his tactical underwear was too tight.

I enjoy shooting my TCP a lot, great DAO trigger too. Funny thing is, tons of LCP's have issues yet people still buy them and recommend them - if a TCP has an issue it's because it's a Taurus and the whole "friends don't let friends buy Taurus" BS starts.

I have a lot to learn about guns as I've only been shooting for a few years. That said, the only "gun guys" I've met who know more than me work at Bill's.

I really enjoy listening to the guy who regularly works in the footwear section get behind the counter and explain ballistics. Lest you think I badger these poor fellows, I generally just listen in and hold my tongue (until I'm in the safety and relative anonymity of teh Internetz ).

i was at Cabela's last summer looking at a rifle. i was specifically looking for a bolt action 25-06, unspecified manufacture, wooden stock with blued action and bbl, hinged floorplate. the schmuck behind the counter (after waiting 30 minutes or better) trys to tell me i needed a 30-30 for where i'm hunting. "thanks for the recommendation, but i don't want a 30-30". then he goes on to tell me about how effective the 30-30 cartridge is inside 100 yards, and HE tells ME that i won't have a shot outside 100 in the area i hunt. really? how do YOU know the ENTIRE terrain of the area i hunt? i also told him i wanted something i could do some 200-400 yard shooting with, and he again told me i don't want a 25-06, but now i wanted a 300 WinMag?! WTF?! and the 300 WinMag isn't going to be overkill for ANY whitetail in MN?

now, this isn't meant to downplay any hunters that use the 30-30 cartridge or the 300 WinMag, but i wasn't looking for one of them! i ended up getting a 270 instead (at Frontiersman) but my main reason was that i didn't want a 30-06 or 30-30! i'm happy as a pig in **** with my old Ruger M77 that i dated to '72, and i'm glad i got the hell out of Cabela's.

sure, Cabela's has some great deals sometimes, and they have lots of stuff to look at, but so does Gander Mountain, and i'm sure as hell not shopping there!!!

Go somewhere else. Why I don't go to Cabelas, or any of the big box stores that sell guns,

Guy I work with wanted a left handed bolt action 300 Win Mag. Hounded the guy at the Rogers store for like six weeks and when the guy finally called him back he was told would have to be special ordered and wouldn't be available until the end of September.

He called the Owatonna store. The guy there called him back immediately, searched every distributor and dealer he could think of and found the gun for $300 less than the Rogers guy quoted him and had it in his hands with the scope mounted in about ten days.

If you want to use your Cabela's promotional goodies, I'd check with the Owatonna store first. It's a bit of a drive but you can always drop the wife off at the outlet mall just up the road. Win-Win.

When I first started reloading I went to Cabelas in Rogers and asked one of the guys near the reloading area about dies. (Note: This was before I learned about Gun Stop).

Me: I'm looking for 45 ACP and .223 dies.
Guy: Ok... here's the 45 ACP and what else were you going to load?
Me: Um .223 5.56 whatever caliber it is.
Guy: Here's our .223 dies but,.. (scanning the shelves) I'm going to have to order the 5.56 dies.
Me: Isn't the .223 and 5.56 the same thing? Maybe a little different?
Guy: Nope two totally different cartridges.
Me: Well I heard you could use .223 dies for 5.56 ammo.
Guy: Nope you'd have to order those off the internet. I don't know if we can even order those.
Me: Oh... Ok well thanks.
Guy: Anything else I can help you with?
Me: NOPE!

Like I said this is when I first started out reloading, I was getting most of my supplies and I knew that .223 and 5.56 were the same (die-wise) So when he was telling me this stuff I couldn't help but get away from him. Like he was any help to me.

Once I was at a scheel's eyeballing the new Gen4 glocks, marked at about $599. I've always been a big fan of the RTF2 grip and they had a G17 RTF2 for $699. When I asked why it was marked so incredibly high, the reply was "oh thats the new gen 5 glock".

"Oh".....

Certain stores have their uses. One can not expect your typical employee at a big box store to be your "source" for knowledge on the subject, now once in awhile you do find that there are knowledgeable folks there on various subjects. I have had both discussion that mimicked those above along with some very good ones that have lasted for close to an hour that were very informative, not dictatorial, and I could tell that this particular guy had knowledge and experiance in that particular area. It is the luck of the draw.

But hey, aparently there are people who are comfortable with having fleet farm mount their scopes for them, who knew.

From my experience, most people I know have 10 fold the knowledge compared to most gun shop employe's. I have actually stood there and watched people ask questions that the person at the counter could not answer, and have actually helped make the sale of a gun based off my info, NOT the employe's on about 4-5 occasions.

Where is my % from the sale BItches??? Lol! Rant off :D

i guess its not to much the not knowing, cause i mean you gotta know quite a bit about alot of things in your department, and as far as firearms sales go, theres alot of options. but when the sales folks start talking about **** they have no clue about, and have no facts behind there stream of **** there spitting out, it gets dumb. its one thing not to know, and admit it, and try to help the customer, but to try and feed them a pile of BS just to try and make a sale, or make a some point, then it gets entertaining.
