handgun purchase ??? military ID

my son is 24 and is on leave from afghanistan...is he able to purchace a handgun off of a board member with his military ID??? Is military ID just like PTP and CCW......

A permit to purchase or a carry permit is not required to purchase from a private seller unless they have that as a condition of the sale. I would have no problem selling a firearm to someone with a valid military ID.

Ram- depends on the person, a person can still be in the military and not be able to touch a weapon, atleast in the Army National Guard, you just cant hold a job where it requires one to carry a weapon, it is called the laughtenberg amendment, and when you do use your military ID becareful and not let anyone make a photocopy of it, that is actually a federal offense,

When I was home on leave from Kuwait/ Iraq in January I didn't have a problem purchasing handguns from 2 different people on the boards with a military ID as well as me being only 19 at the time. I'm sure that most sellers like the added security of a P2P.

Good point on the Laughtenberg amendment. I served in an Infantry unit and we tend to forget that there are other MOS's.

Mil ID doesn't prove residence so MN DL would be better.

I tend to subscribe to the CMA (Cover My --- ) line of thinking so for me it would be MN DL and PTP *or* MN DL and PTC at a MINIMUM.

When I was in all I needed was a copy of my orders and ID (can't remember if they looked at civ or mil), and I was stationed in California.

Stationed in Cali and buying in Minnesota? Should have had to show something to prove residency as it isn't legal to sell to someone that is not a resident.

you retain your home state residency when you are in the military. Just because you might be in BFE, you are still a resident of Minnesota. For tax, voting and Driver's license purposes. Heck for that matter, your license can expire and you don't HAVE to renew it till you come home whenever that MIGHT be.

Can't say I would advise it, but you could according to DMV.

All true as I noted BUT you would still have to show some kind of proof of residency and MIL ID does not do that for you. And whatever you do do NOT let anyone copy anything off of your MIL ID or take a copy of. Worst week of my life.

personally, i'd be fine with it. ask the seller.
i'm one of the guys that sold a gun to SleepingJake back in Jan. i was MORE THAN HAPPY to sell a firearm to a 19 year old kid fresh from Iraq with a military ID. funny thing though, i forgot to make up a bill of sale... hope he doesn't rob any banks with that gun!
