Firearm gift for the groom?

Hey guys, first off I want to make it clear that the firearm, which ever ends up being the gift, will be transfered legally though a FFL01. I don't like playing around with the BATFE.

Now that that is out of the way, I would like your opinions on something. I have a friend that just finished SKILLS and is currently looking for a job in LE. He is also getting married in January. As a wedding gift to him, I would like to get him a firearm and engrave it with his name and department if he finds a job before the wedding. The only firearms he currently owns is his Glock 22 and a pump 12ga.

I would like to keep the total at or under $1000, which is to include some ammo and mags if the firearm requires them.

Problem is, I don't know what to give him. An AR? Single action revolver? Double action revolver? AK? As you can probably tell, I'm lost on what to get him. I know you guys don't know his tastes or needs, but suggestions never hurt.

For you active/retired LE, what did you wish you had when you first started out?

Id go classy, some sort of old but beautiful condition Colt revolver. most likely in .38 or .357. Sort of a salute to the traditional service men/women and gun they were often issued.

Engrave if you like, or if the gun is nice enough, maybe spend that money on a nice display box instead (also protecting the originality of the gun).

Something he could be proud to display, and shoot once in a while.

I'd second this idea. Find a really nice revo and then get a display case

Both of my suggestions are listed. A nice 1911, or a nice revolver. I would skip on the AR, AK, or polymer framed guns if the intention is a keepsake that only gets range duty. If you are looking for something that you hope he uses in his new career I would obviously have other suggestions. You would also have to wait to see where he ends up working and figure out what they allow.

If its going to be a firearm that you want him to use as a new officer/deputy, I would be looking into a nice J-frame or Kahr BUG with the appropriate holster setup.

Edit: Excellent choice on a wedding gift for a good friend though. A firearm that will last a lifetime along with his marriage.

Why look further? It has nice slab sides to engrave, is classic, classy, collectable, funtional, period.

Get him a glock 19. Small enough to carry, large enough to put 700 rounds through it in one range session. Good sight radius, large magazine capacity and universally accepted as the single best all purpose handgun. And better yet, you don't have to break the bank to get one.

As a LEO, he will want to carry most of the time. A g19 will fill that role perfectly.
