Moving and I have a couple questions

Postby CypressTrout on Tue Aug 14, 2012 6:57 pm

I am moving to Florida in a couple months, and was thinking that instead of loading up my collection in the vehicle (which would take up valuable space) I might just ship them. From what I could find I can ship the handguns UPS and the Long guns USPS to my new residence in Florida, and because I am retaining ownership I do not need to ship to an FFL. So is the research I have found correct? Here is some stuff from the ATF website.

Yes, that is correct. Keep in mind that somebody else can sign for these packages (and you should ship them requiring an adult signature), only YOU can open the packages after they arrive at your new home.

Could not say about the laws between states but for more fun reading the USPS info on firearms starts on page 79

Thank you for both of the responses. I will insure the packages and anything insured over $200 requires and adult signature. Anyone have any other tips for shipping firearms?

Have lots of money

Seriously, I ship long guns pretty commonly. Make an online account with FEDEX, pack, print your labels at home, and drop them off. Same for UPS, you can even give them to a driver and they can scan them into their system.
Handguns have to go next day air-$$$
I like to ship on Monday or Tuesday, so the package gets delivered before the weekend. I want to minimize the time the shipper has possession of my stuff.
USPS is good, but more expensive for long guns, also no tracking.
Remember, gun control is not about guns, it's about control.
