The full shroud will add some much needed weight for shooting the heavy stuff. All I've shot so far was some .38 spcl and 10 rounds of American Eagle 158gr. The latter reminded you you're shooting a magnum cartridge, but it wasn't uncontrollable by any means. I may want to get Hogue grips before shooting anything heavier, my knuckle takes a beating on the bottom of the trigger guard when shooting the magnum loads.

Yuppie,

Could you elaborate on EXACTLY what you did to help the trigger pull. I dry fired my old j-frame a few times and was amazed at how much better it feels than my new SP101 in DA....although the single action feels fine.

I'm happy for you and your new purchase but I can't get past the opening on the rtf2. Did I miss it in the marketplace? ;)

Installed this spring kit:

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/123277 ... uger-sp101

.. and used some Fitz metal polish to clean up some of the metal on metal contact areas that you'll find when swapping the springs out (excluding the sear/hammer engagement areas, I leave those sorts of changes to a trained gunsmith) - Ruger left the internals dry as a bone which didn't help so I also took the liberty of adding some grease or oil to contact surfaces. I expect it would have smoothed out a bit over time but the second stage hitch was so bad it felt like the revolver was hang-firing while I waited for the hammer to drop with the original grips and spring tension.

Make sure you read the manual and follow the directions to compress the main/hammer spring using the small brass colored pin included in the stock handguards, and wear safety glasses while you work, had a close call because I was dumb but quickly found and put mine on for the rest of the project.

Honestly, a trained smith will probably make it even better by tuning the springs and cleaning up the metal on metal engagement surfaces but a $9 spring kit seemed like a logical place to start without throwing a lot of money into the gun or making permanent modifications, I'm happy with where mine is at so I'm going to stick with it as-is. I'm sure dry firing and range time will smooth things out further.

South of $500.....there was a couple minor finish blemishes (nothing that won't buff out) I pointed out and then made an offer, they accepted.

Nope. Unless it's a .22 (8 round) or a .327 Federal Magnum (6 round), all SP101s are 5 round.

Correct....for the strength/weight of the SP101 I find the 5 shot capacity a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

I ordered a custom holster from Ray at Lobo Gun Leather. I wanted a pancake that had a thumb break and 3-slots for dual carry option....he agreed to build a sort of hybrid between two designs for me....he told me 4-5 weeks.

I have an SP101 in .357 with the 2" barrel and bobbed hammer. I had the smiths at Ahlmans do a trigger job on and it is probably my favorite gun now. They put some lighter springs in it and smoothed everything out. Used to be rough and heavy with a nasty catch just before the hammer fell. Now its just smooth. They did an awesome trigger job on my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 as well.
There is a 4' sp for sale locally I've been eyeing up. just dont quite have the funds right now though.
