Buying my first Mosin

Postby dudg on Mon Nov 26, 2012 10:12 pm

I will be heading to the cities this weekend and will be picking up a Mosin Nagant and a Spam can of ammo. I will coming up from Mankato area so I'm looking on the south side of the cities. Question is should I just stop at Fleet Farm or is there better quality/price elsewhere that I should stop at?

If you're not looking for a particular arsenal or vintage, Fleet Farm is your best bet. Bring a little flashlight to check the barrel and a rag or 5 to clean your hands with after handling it/them. Cosmoline works great to preserve them but stinks to high heaven and suck to clean off your hands.

There are three places that come to mind, that have Mosin rifles in any quantity. Fleet Farm, Bill's in Robbinsdale, and Dunham's sporting goods stores.
Dunhams are around the state, but none in the metro.
Bill's is a little out of your south side requirements, and a touch more expensive than Fleet Farm.
As mentioned before, bring a bore light, and a rag ;)
If you haven't done any reading, and want to do some studying before buying, here's a couple of links...

Good luck, and let us know what you get.

Fleet Farm has them for $89, at least the last time I was there... There's one in Owatonna, which would be convenient for you.

That's their sale price. Their normal price is 99.00 and they go on sale about once a month. BTW the Blaine FF has a really nice display that makes it easy to look at a bunch of them at once. Most stores only display one and keep the rest in the back. Blaine has a special display devoted for Mosins and it holds like 15 or so.

Brooklyn Park has a good handful on display too. Not sure about Lakeville, it has been years since I've been down there.

Call first to see what they have in terms of rifles and ammo... (952) 435-3832

Probably not out...but more is better for selection! Good luck! Remember to rinse with water/windex after shooting the corrosive stuff, even the old Commie guns can rust.

Hello I am new to this forum. And I have a question. I have a M38 Nagant that I got a few years ago and have had the bolt modified to the soviet sniper configuration. But am now looking for a gunsmith in the Twin city area
that could mount a PU scope for me. It seems the ones I have talked to have no interest. Is there anyone out there that can help. Thanks

Here is my mosin that I put a scope on using the rear iron sight ......but not the cheapo add-on way. I actually tapped out the three pins holding that rear iron sight and that exposes a 3/8" dovetail that you can use to mount a scope on ....tight and right. It takes a weaver 3/8" to 5/8" conversion kit so that you can fit the regular sized scopes that take 5/8" scope ring setups. Then I used a handgun scope rated for heavy recoil so that the eye relief was right. A regular rifle scope won't work cause the eye relief is all wrong for this awkwordly long rifle. It works out slick as can be. Just used some blue Loctite on the mount and it has held zero beautifully so far , with great accuracy for a $100 gun with $ 150 into the scope. I also put a Limbsaver recoil pad on mine cause they kick like a mule on LSD. I'll try to post close up pics shortly and also specifics on what scope I used. It was a while ago and I haven't been to the range in a long time now.

Depending on how much you know about them, take "wrench's" advice and check out those forums, I thought I knew quite a bit about Mosin's before I started checking out those sites, and then I realized I didn't know squat!!! :D

The point being yea, read up on them, and get an idea of what is out there. Fleet Farm is probably your best bet, that is where all of mine have come from. They are covered in cosmoline as was previously stated. Generally the FF staff is pretty good, and if you ask them, they may even try to find a Mosin with a hex receiver for you! Beware though, if you don't know yet, that most 7.62x54R ammo is corrosive unless it is commercial hunting ammo or newer production that states it is non-corrosive. Just make sure to clean your rifle at the end of the day!!! Happy hunting and shooting!!

Buying my first Mosin

Postby dudg on Sat Dec 01, 2012 10:36 pm

Well I picked one up today. From my limited knowledge and little research I did it looks as though I have a 1939 Tula M91/30 with all s/n matching. A little more $ than I expected but a spam can of ammo was on sale so that helped.

What did they sell that spam can for at FF? Congrats on the new addition ... Once you fire it, you'll understand why it won't be your last Mosin :D
