Then there is the problem of correct sizing of features before "hard anodizing" as it penetrates the surface about 0.001" and builds up on the surface about 0.001" leaving a surface that can only be diamond lapped to correct size if needed. Internal holes are a different story as size of hole will determine the amount of etching and plating. You may end up with oversize holes, or undersize holes that would need to be lapped to final size. Ensuring a correct size side to side would be difficult. Masking the holes is highly recommended here.

I may have to reconsider my decision on whether to join this venture.

I see what you are saying.......but any lower I have ever seen or used has all holes and features plated in hard ano - I have never witnessed a lower or talked to any of my lower mfg buddies that have plugged holes. I would be willing to bet that if you use an experienced lower anodizer and machine the holes oversized, a person wouldn't have any issues. BUT I could be completely wrong, as well....... :D
Out of curiosity, I am going to check one of my DPMS lowers with gage pins......will let you know what I find.

Man, assuming I can work the days and the machining price isn't crazy, count me in for 1 pls!

Just so I'm clear (as I am new to building), I've been reading back and my understanding is that this party/group buy is to create/mill our own lowers, minus the parts in a LPK, so the main chunk of metal?

Thanks for any clarification guys!

Your going to want to get them plated all at one time. Most platers have a minimum batch fee of ~100$ so if you get 1 done costs you 100$ you get 10-20 still costs you only 100$. They charge based on surface area.

I'd like to get in on this as well. I want to wait and see how much the machining is going to cost.

I duracoated one ... read the directions ... they recommend some sorta "roughing up" the piece ... in the case of aluminum, they recommend phosphating it, first!

I found a guy who will duracoat my lower for $45. I'm not sure how it'll work out with leaving it there, if I even can. Is duracoat an acceptable finish for the pin holes and such? I've got no idea.

Ahh, I see what's going on. Everyone here has some 80%s laying around and we'd be getting together for a 'drill party'? Yes? to finish off the lowers? I'm going to see if I can get my hands on an 80%!

Happy New Year to everyone!

I am supposed to be getting 25 80% in the next week or so - that is all I could get my hands on. The price for the machine work is going to be $50 per lower. Ares Arms charges $65 per lower, just for comparison. The lower itself is $80.

So now we find out who is serious and who is not........lol :D My thought is to send me $80 for the lower to get started - because of the large number of pepe's that have spoken up, we should probably stick to one lower per person out of this 25, anyway. If you want to get your own lower, that is fine, too. The remaining $50 would be due on party day.

How does Saturday, February 9th sound for a tentative date? Assuming the lowers come in as expected or close to it.

What do you guys think??

LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED! :)

Do you want us to pay you via PayPal?

All of it sounds good to me, ill pay you as soon as I figure where to send it.

I am also looking to ride with someone to the party, anyone willing to let me car pool and split gas money?

I'd still like one for me and the wife, but won't be greedy if it's an issue with more requests than available. Let me know where to make the check out to.

I'm still in!

I can drive 3 from the cities, so far The Lance and BemidjiDweller have spots if they want them, with one more available. We can figure out the logistics of the drive out and back once everything is confirmed.

I'm in, show us where and how to pay you. Though, I would much rather pay for both the lower and the machining cost at the same time in shop. But I understand wanting some money up front. Either way, I'm sure someone will step up and pay for lowers that someone flakes out on.

An updated list so everyone knows exactly how much they owe would be beneficial.
