Right holster for home use

Postby ShaneInMN on Wed Feb 06, 2013 8:54 pm

I went out to Arnzen arms tonight to look at their holsters. I need something to wear around the house after work (I don't have carry permit), but I want to have my gun on me while I am in my home. I am fairly mobile at home, sit on the couch and in my computer chair which has arm rests. I am thinking belt holster is out of the question. I've been looking at a shoulder holster for my 5" 1911.

Any suggestions?

I've been eyeing the Galco Jackass Rig on Amazon, haven't really price shopped, but that seems to be the best idea at this time. I currently don't have any extra magazines but I do plan to purchase a couple Wilson 47D's.

Are you going to get a PTC?

If so...it seems to be common to carry in a similar manner for the most part. A shoulder holster at home and belt on the go might get confusing.

Yes, that's the plan. I can not carry in my work, so the gun will be left in my vehicle while I am at work.

Seems like a lot of money just to wander around the house...go buy whatever Uncle Mike's holster fits your handgun and save yourself about $150.00.

That's the thing, if it's something that would serve me down the road once I have my carry permit, even more the better. Right now my guns are in the safe as I type this. That's not the comfort level that I want. It might be spendy, but if it give me a sense of security, it's worth the money. I live out in the country so odds of something crazy happening are a lot less, but I prefer be prepared than not.

I'm willing to spend a hundred bucks if it keeps my firearm on my side while I'm at home. I dont expect I'm going to have to replace it every year or two.

Once you get your permit, do you plan on wearing a jacket (when it's not winter) while wearing a shoulder rig?

I was thinking a vest might be okay, but I've never worn one, so that will have to be considered for comfort.

I don't condone "open carry," but I'm not going to tell you what to do. If it's legal, you make your own decisions.

I can say that with a shoulder rig, some folks will have a problem with staring down the barrel of a gun while waiting behind you in line at Chipotle or elsewhere.

Right holster for home use

You might be surprised how well you can sit with a belt holster, either IWB or OWB.

I'm not advocating this as a solution, only a trial, but unload your pistol and try Mexican carry (IWB) as well as just tucking it in your belt outside your pants and sit in your computer chair and on your couch and see if the location works with your body before you buy. I like the 3:30 location.

Many people with a carry permit will conceal in IWB holsters. My opinion is it gives you the most wardrobe freedom other than pocket carry, which limits you to smaller pistols.

I don't plan to carry openly, I want it to be as discreet as possible. My 1911 may end up just being my home protection firearm. I do have a Beretta Nano as well, even though it's my spouses, she still hasn't shot it or the G17 or 1911, so so she may turn her nose up to the Nano completely, that would leave me with a very small conceal carry firearm.

All of this is up in the air at this point, right now. At the moment, I want to holster my 1911 while I am at home. If I can save a few bucks and use the same holster for carry outside of the home as inside, then that's just icing on the cake. Evad's point of confusing the location of the firearm with different holsters makes sense. This is why I was thinking a shoulder holster. I can see myself wearing a vest and not having it as a burden year round, it would suit my needs in the home. I'll have to try some out and see what I think. I "fit" into my computer chair fairly snug, so the belt holsters concern me. I'll tuck the 1911 in my pocket or belt and see how that goes tomorrow, but I suspect there will be some adjustments that need to be made to sit down. This may just be normal carry positioning that I haven't thought about yet.

I just have this thought that a gun sitting in my safe, 30ft from me, locked away, is not serving the purpose that it was made for. Seems if I can have it on my body makes the most sense.

Thanks everyone for your responses and hope to hear others opinions!

Not to mention sweeping yourself, and others when drawing from, or re-holstering into a shoulder rig.

Depending on your size a 5" 1911 might poke out the rear printing I wear a 42R and a 4" 1911 is the most I can get by with in a shoulder rig and only used while doing extended time in a vehicle, I dont eat at Chipotle and wear a cover garment.
Will you wear the rig while going to work? Trying to doff and donn a shoulder rig is pretty hard to do discretly.

Might look at Sideguard Snap, Alessi CQCs and the Ritchie CQQR I typically wear one of these with a cover garment and enjoy the ability to just unsnap the holster when at home and place holster and firearm on my computer desk or coffee/end table if watching boob tube.

And what works for one might not work for others because of firearm choice, body shape, daily routine, clotheing choice etc
Hence the holster box, Presently I am thinking about a holster either a Snap,CQQR, or a :o Crossbreed Supertuck for a M&P9c and also think of something for a Ruger Alaskan

I rarely take my carry off when at home and use a MiniTuck at the 4:00 position. I regularly sit on the couch, bar stools, lovesac (bean bag of sorts) and home office chair. No issues with comfort 90% of the time.
