Marlin Model 60 not cycling properly

Postby bjohnson on Sat Feb 09, 2013 7:35 pm

I have a Marlin .22 Model 60 that fires just fine, but does not eject the spent cartridge. If I pull the slide back and let it go, it ejects and pulls up a new round and is ready to go.....Until I fire again. I have done quite a bit of interwebs research, and have found mostly bolt action Marlins having this problem, but with the semi autos they say to clean it.....Believe you me, I've cleaned it. Anyone have ideas of what is going on? I have nothing against bolt actions, but I would like to keep my semi a semi.

Some .22's are ammo sensitive. What ammo have you seen this problem with and have you tried a different load?

Not a bad idea. I've been shooting (or attempting to shoot) CCI CB 22 LR. I'll pick up a few other brands and see what happens!

Aren't those reduced charge/ quiet loads?
If so that is going to be an issue, even if the rifle is otherwise working correctly.
Try standard or high velocity 22lr rounds.

Correct. CB loads will not cycle most, if not all, semi auto actions. The OP needs to shoot "high velocity" .22 LR rounds in order for the action to cycle properly. I looked on CCI's website and CB loads are "conical ball, reduced power/noise" loads.

Perhaps of greater concern than incomplete cycling would be the possibility of a squib round with such low power ammo.

That gun should cycle any normal .22 long rifle. "CB's" are like .22 shorts or Aguila Colibri's (which are primer driven, no gunpowder). Those "short" 20 grain rounds rarely cycle semi autos, they are quieter and great in a bolt or revolver.

Not to be the resounding bell. But the marlin 60's I've shot have always shot perfectly with any ammo even the federal boxes that other guns have trouble with. I did once try some calibri ammo out of one i owned and it did the same thing. Was fun though.. Anyways the only other thing I have heard of was a worn out mag tube spring. Which is pretty easy and cheap to fix.. That was on a buddies old old old one though..

Very simple great gun. cycling is completly done with the recoil of the charge being ignited. If the bolt doesn't move back far enough to cycle it is either a low power round or a dirty gun. Or I guess some metal galling. Or worn out bolt spring, not that I have ever seen that problem.

CB round doesn't have enough power to cycle the bolt back far enough to kick the casing out. My Marlin 60 prefers CCI standard velocity or high velocity 40grain. Also if it's old the nylon buffer block in the rear can become brittle. Mine shattered on a cold day and dumped little bits in the action and jammed up the works. It was a PITA to replace that buffer block.

Those CB shorts are quite little buggers, and they do not cycle the action on my old Sears Teddy Williams. Well thats not entirely true, once in a while one will cycle.
