3-gun Match - Dust em' off

Postby Payne on Tue Feb 12, 2013 1:51 pm

MN3GunGroup is back at it with a 3-gun match at the SCAPSA Range near Clearwater. Date is March 16th. Set up starts at 0730 hrs. and shooting starts at 1000 hrs. New shooters are welcome as are spectators.

Stages are not set yet but they should be fairly short without a lot of movement because of the unknown weather conditions. Longest distance for any weapon is 80 yrds so no real long range shooting ability or equipment is needed for this match.

Due to the cost and unavailability of some ammunition, there will be a push for 4 new divisions. These divisions will center around .22 rimfire rifles with/without optics, and pistol caliber carbines with/without optics. Scoring may be different and this match will be the first one we try running like this, so everyone should be willing to come out and shoot for a "good time" only. No one will be winning any new trucks or anything like that. At this time, due to time constraints, no one is allowed to shoot two different divisions.

This is the tentative format for the new divisions.

• Tac-22-Optics: 22lr rifle with magnified optic, 12 or 20 gauge semi-auto or pump shotgun, and 22lr or bigger handgun.
• Tac-22-Limited: 22lr rifle with iron sights or non-magnified optic, 12 or 20 gauge semi-auto or pump shotgun, and 22lr or bigger handgun.
• Tac-Carbine-Optics: Carbine rifle with magnified optic, 12 or 20 gauge semi-auto or pump shotgun, and 9mm or bigger handgun.
• Tac-Carbine-Limited: Carbine rifle with iron sights or non-magnified optic, 12 or 20 gauge semi-auto or pump shotgun, and 9mm or bigger handgun.

Again, the new divisions are not set in stone yet, they are just being talked about but I will try to get back as soon as possible when the final decision is made.

I will monitor this thread and answer any questions that I can. You can also check http://www.mn3gungroup.org and the mn3gungroup facebook page for further information.

Sounds kinda cool. So for the .22 divisions would there be any mag restrictions?

Hey folks.. first off, I want to thank shooter115 for all the info on 3-Gun he provided for me and the offer to talk about it more. It was extremely helpful.

A friend and I are very interested in participating in this (although may just decide to watch).

However, we currently lack a shotgun to prepare (we both have Glock 19s and a rifle we can share - an FNAR 16").

Since neither of us are super experienced so we would like to take the proper preparations to familiarize ourselves with the rules, safety and firearms. As a result, I'm wondering if anyone in the metro area would be willing to rent a shotgun to use for a day to practice and prepare appropriately. I know it's an unusual request but figured it couldn't hurt to just throw it out there in case someone was willing. I'm sure we could come to some type of mutually beneficial exchange. Or heck! Come with us and let's have some fun together! That'd be even more fun!

Thanks for considering!

EDIT: Found one. Thanks all.

Chris

I don't know about .22 rimfire mag restrictions but I am thinking you can use any size mag you want as long as it is hooked up to a bolt action :D

I don't have a shotgun to rent, but if you guys are serious about getting into the sport for not a lot of money, I would recommend a trip to gun or pawn shops in the area and look for a used Benelli Nova pump shotgun. They make a very nice starter 3-gun shotgun that will allow you to get into the sport for not a lot of money, then you can always grow into a semi-auto of some sort farther down the road. When/if you later sell the Nova you will get a good return on your money. You will ideally pick up a shotgun that holds 8 rounds in the magazine.

For practice training get yourself a box of clay birds, spread some out in a line across the back berm on your range (if you can do that sort of thing), and practice shooting them as fast as you can get on target, and don't forget to put out more clays than your shotgun has capacity for so you can practice some reloading as well. The targets you will be shooting most often with shotgun are normally stationary clays, or steel plates of some sort, and they will be arranged in such a way that it will force you to load more shells into your shotgun to finish the target array. You will also need to find a way to carry extra shells on your person. This may not be mandatory for this first match (you may be allowed to load shells from a table top), but that is only because of the cold weather and the cloths we may be forced to wear. Loading off of your belt will be faster and is good practice for the future.

Thanks, Payne. That's very helpful.

I do have an old hunting shotgun that I got from my father-in-law at his passing. It's old and needs some work so I may take that to a gunsmith for inspection and cleaning. That would probably be suitable enough for practice.

Alright Payne, I'll use a bolt gun......so long as you use a flintlock muzzle loader. That sounds about fair, I might even beat you then :D

The reason I ask on the .22 stuff is just cause most rimfire pistols only hold 10 rounds, but then there's stuff like the PMR-30. Also with the majority of .22 rifles have 10 round mags. Just trying to get ahead of the questions that would come up I guess.

Mute point for me really since I'll be shooting my regular gear, just so I can try to beat ya........Most likely not going to happen, but I'm sure gonna give it a go 8-)

Please understand this this Tac-22 and Tac-Carbine Divisions is something we are trying to keep people involved and shooting while we are dealing with the cost and unavalability of ammunition. The stages will still be set up as a normal 3-gun and those with 22lr and pistol carbines may not be able to hit distance targets. Hits on distance targets, especially with a 22, may also be impossible to see. RO's will be instructed to do their best with counting hits on steel targets that may not fall or even move with a 22 or carbine hit. Please be kind to the RO's as we're already asking them to work harder to call those hits. Not hitting a distance target with a 22 or carbine, or not be able to see the hit is a compromise people will have to take to being allowed to use those guns in our matches. Remember that these matches we put on are meant to be more for fun and training. Competition is always fun, but remember that there is nothing to be won from our matches besides bragging rights.

Entry fee is usually about $20. We've always told people to bring about 100 rounds for each gun plus about 10 slugs. We don't have a round count yet or even know if we will use slugs, but if you bring that much ammo as recommended, you'll be good to go.

I have a short stage designed for this match. You might want to practice reloads with all three weapons, transitions from strong to weak hand/shoulder (doing it safely), and engaging targets with strong and weak hand/shoulder. I'm just sayin'

The stage is still up for debate, if the weather is bad it might get changed to all strong hand only because I don't want someone getting their weapons hung up on heavy clothing. It is still a skill that is worth practicing in your dryfire drills.
