Gun Cleaning

Postby unknown on Thu May 16, 2013 8:38 pm

Hi there,

I need to buy a new gun cleaner and also lubricant. ( not 2 in 1 type of thing). I am thinking on Gunslick for the cleaner and Hoppe's Precision Lubricating Oil. But those choices are based on what I see being popular, not anecdotal feedback.

Could you guys recommend what you are using? and maybe share briefly your cleaning ritual?

Thank you so much for your thoughts.

ED's Red for general cleaning
Humpy's White for Copper remover.
Occasionally JBbore paste for certain heavily fouled barrels

Slide Glide Lite or Pro Shot Gold, for lube in summer (or a homemade version= #2 auto grease mixed with STP)

Look here for recipes. http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm

Gun Cleaning

Postby jshuberg on Thu May 16, 2013 8:57 pm

I use Hoppes in the barrel, and CLP on everything else for carbon fouling. KG-12 for copper fouling. I also use CLP as a lubricant. I have 2 barrels for each pistol, and after cleaning the frame and slide I throw in the clean barrel, and toss the dirty one in a jar of Hoppes to soak. This gets me back into a clean, working gun quickly, and I can clean the dirty barrel at my convenience in the next couple days after soaking. I use slide glide on the rails and barrel of my X-5, and it works great, but is kinda messy to clean.

+1 on the CLP and Hoppes 9.

Hoppes to clean.
Lube, usually Mobil 1, but on stainless guns, or in the summer, my patented mixture of ATF and engine assembly lube.

10/22: bore snake, then CLP for non barrel cleaning and lube.
Handgun, centerfire rifles: Hoppes the barrel every few range trips (boresnake every trip) CLP for non barrel cleaning and lube.

Yeah, but the aerosol bottle is only good for spraying in and deep cleaning. I'd get a 4oz bottle with straw instead.

I've tried a few things ... I've settled on jest Hoppes fer most any cleaning and copper removal ... and either Break-Free 'er Mobil-1 fer lube ... in some cases, I've used patches wet with oil to do some minor cleaning ... moreso with Mobil-1.

I used to use the tacti-cool cleaners and lube, but they are now too expensive and work the same as cheaper options:

Hoppe's #9 for general bore cleaning
Sweets 7.62 for heavy copper removal
Mobile 1 synthetic grease (thick)
Outers gun oil (thin)
Remoil (spray)
non-chlorinated brake cleaner for general blast cleaning

All except the 7.62 can be purchased at Walmart or Fleet Farm.

Good Luck!

Only slightly on topic. While I love shooting and really enjoy reloading, I hate cleaning my guns. I send my shirts to the cleaners for clean and press, and if I could do the same for my guns, I would :o

I'll make you a deal, I'll clean them but for each minute cleaning I get a minute stick time. I promise your guns will sparkle. ;)

I really enjoy shooting and I also really enjoy cleaning my guns. There's something thearaputic for me about tearing it apart after being shot and making sure it's ready to be out away.

I just use a hoppes kit, came with #9 cleaner and lube. Seems to work fine for me.
