Drove to get my address updated this morning. Talked with sheriff about it and he pretty much said what others have said about it varying store to store. Also spoke with CS at Gander and they are taking care of the issue for me so that is good news. Thanks for all the replies. I'd suggest spending the $10 if you ever move to avoid any hassle.

This ^ Most, if not all FFLs will cover their ass to the extreme (no abbreveations on the paperwork, matching info on PTC, PTP and ID, etc) just to avoid hassles from the BATFE. Whether it's required by law or not is moot. If the BAFTE hassles them, rightly or wrongly, it's up to the individual FFL to PROVE that they were right in a court of law. Remember "fast and furious"...do you trust the BATFE to be 100% correct on all the laws? All it takes is ONE a-hole agent to ruin your day. Better to be overly cautious.

I had the same issue at Gander mountain in Rogers, even though I had purchased a Glock 17 a few weeks before in St. Cloud. The guy in St. Cloud rolled his eyes and said it was company policy not law. I went back to Rogers and asked about other forms of picture ID beside a DL ( i have 2 college IDs and one from the VA with picture but no address). I asked why they needed to match and was told it was federal law. I asked how federal law covered MN gun laws and in states without a need for a PTP or PTC could they therefore sell no guns since people in those states didnt have two documents to match?

The guy at the counter got the manager who told me it was company policy to basically cover there ass. He was very nice about it and even apologetic. I put the gun I wanted on layaway, went home to St. Cloud, stopped in at the sheriff's office and 10$ and 10 min. later walked out with a matching card.

Of the big box gun stores I like Gander best (due mostly to Glen in St. Cloud) so It's worth it to me to pay the 10$ since they had the 900$ left handed stag AR I wanted on the shelf. thought ten bucks was worth it. I assume had I called the sheriff to tell him I moved that would have taken a half an hour which is more then 10$ of my time.

I remember years ago I had a PTP, and it had my old address on it from when I lived in the cities. I tired to purchase a firearm from a dealer up north after I moved back up there. My driver's license had my new address on it. They wouldn't sell me the gun because all the information didn't match up.

So like stated before it may be hit and miss depending on there you get your gun from. But to avoid all issues just pay the $10 fee, and get a up to date carry permit with all the right info on it.

It has nothing to do with state law. The ATF requires that all credentials be accurate and a PTC with an old address isn't accurate.

You can get an accurate PTP for free if the $10 fee is an issue

When I got my recent MN DL, the address was misspelled. When I got my MN PTC, the address was misspelled again, and it was misspelled differently than the MN DL's mucked up address.

I went down to the Scott County building, paid my $10 to fix the MN Dl, went across the street, walked in, explained the situation, handed the the mucked up MN PTC and they printed me a correct one for free right then and there. 2 weeks later, I had my corrected MN DL.

Any potential ID problems are now solved.

Seriously, people get that bent outta shape over $10? Hell, if it was $100, maybe...... Even then, $100 is a night out. Not a big deal. Just fix it. It's not worth the hassle of a p-ing contest over who is right by the side of the road when the LEO wants to detain you because things don't match up.
