1911's vs. 2011's

Postby Flip on Sun Sep 28, 2008 1:34 pm

In my never ending quest to ask just one more question ....

For all of you 1911 guys out there ... do you like the idea of the 2011? If I understand correctly, the only real difference is double-stack vs. single stack (and yes, there are generally a few more calibers to shoot in general ... in other words, it seems like they are more geared to the 9, 40, etc. instead of being mainly focused on the 45).

Are there other significant differences between the 1911 & 2011 models besides the single vs. double stack? I don't see many posts about this stuff. If there are links about this, could you post them up so I can have a look? Also, assuming that the internal stuff is similar, why don't more 1911 guys shoot the 2011's? Is it mainly a tradition thing or are there problems with the 2011 system?

Basically, I just want as much info comparing the differences between the 1911 & 2011 guns as I can get. Especially if one is signifantly better than the other.

I hava a P12 that while it is not a 2011, is a double stack 45. It is one of my carry pieces. The size of a commander but 12+1. It is the same grip angle as the 1911 just a little thicker grip. The top ends are the same and you can work the trigger on a 2011 just like a 1911. IMHO, the only difference is the size of the grip and the capacity. Tom

Magazine capacity is the major difference. From that magazine change obviously the grip width increases. While some of the internal parts vary slight, mechanically they are the same. I have both and based on their intended use they each have there place.

The 2011's are really a product of competitive shooting. I use the 2011's in USPSA for open and limited classes and for steel shoots. The reason you see most of the 2011's in 9, 38 super and 40 is capacity as it relates to particular classes in the various sports. 40 is the choice in limited, 38 super in open and some 9 in open also. You can get 27-28 rounds in a open gun so reloads are rare.

I use the 1911 in USPSA for single stack division, here 45 rules the class, although 40 can be used it is scored as minor. My wife also uses a compact single stack in 9 as a carry gun. I shoot slow fire center fire league with a single stack.

If you ever want to see them side by side let me know, we can meet at a range and your welcome to try them.

.40 can be major in USPSA single stack.

The para's and the other steel guns are more or less wide bodied 1911's. The STI/SVI 2011's are quite a bit different from 1911's. The plastic grip and triggerguard is one piece on it's own and can separate from the frame.

mmcnx2,

Thanks for the offer. I'd be interested in taking you up on it sometime. If you don't mind, drop me a PM sometime and we can arrange it.
