Target shooting during archery season

Postby EastSideRich on Wed Sep 11, 2013 8:33 pm

Is there any rules about target shooting during archery season?
I'm hoping to sight in a rifle this weekend, but my brother told me you can't be in the woods with a rifle during bow season.
I'm pretty sure he's mistaken, but couldn't find anything about it on the DNR's website, so,thought I'd check here.
If I recall correctly you can't be out there with a gun during gun season with out a license, but it seems goofy that there'd be rules like during archery season, as it's almost 4 months long.

The only restriction is the preceding week to firearms opener. I don't remember if it only applies to license holders or not though.

Sent from somewhere in MN, ND, WI, or even SD

It only applies during firearms deer season. From the DNR regs

Possession oF FiReaRms BeFoRe, DuRing, anD aFteR
the FiReaRms DeeR season
(Note: This section does not apply to the Muzzleloader Season, see
page 89, except that muzzleloaders legal for deer may be possessed only by
persons with a muzzleloader or firearms deer license during that season.)
No person may possess a firearm or ammunition outdoors during the
period beginning the fifth day before the open firearms season and ending
the second day after the close of the season within an area where deer may
be legally taken by firearms, except:
• A person who has a valid firearms big game license in possession may
hunt big game during the open season with a firearm and ammunition
authorized for big game.
• Possession is also legal under these conditions:
> An unloaded firearm that is cased or in a closed trunk of a motor
vehicle.
> A shotgun and shells containing No. 4 buckshot or smaller diameter
lead shot or nontoxic shot.
> A .22 caliber rimfire handgun or rifle with .22 caliber short, long, or
long rifle cartridges, .22 magnum or .17 caliber rimfire.
> Handguns possessed by a person with a carry permit.
> On a target range or under a target range permit issued by a conservation
officer.

So its OK to sight in your deer rifle during archery hunting season- but I'd be dang careful where you shoot because I've seen the archery guys do some really stupid things while so camo'ed up you don't see them...(like put up a stand and be in it over the impact area on my private range - without permission....)

Target shooting during archery season

Thanks! That's what I thought.
Other hunters shouldn't be a problem. We'll be on 120 acres of private land and will be clearing some trails and setting up some trail cameras in the area where we'll be shooting, so if anyone does sneak in there, we will almost certainly spot them. It's super thick in there too, so they'd have to set up right on our cut trails.

Thanks again,
