RUSHFORD — A 47-year-old Utica man was killed Saturday night when he was accidentally struck by shrapnel during a bachelor/bachelorette party near Arendahl west of Rushford.

Some of the people at the party were shooting at "explosive targets for fun," Jensen said. Just before 9 p.m., someone shot at a target as Taylor and others watched. Taylor was apparently hit in the abdomen by shrapnel.

"Something was added, some metal, and that created the problem," the sheriff said.

Taylor's two sons saw him killed the day before Father's Day, Jensen said. Taylor was standing behind someone shooting a high-powered rifle at an exploding Tannerite target when Taylor was hit; the target was 20 to 30 yards away.....

Tannerite "accident" kills man

Postby AR-15collector on Mon Jun 17, 2013 9:14 pm

I feel bad for the loss, but doesn't the package expressly say "do not shoot closer than 100 yards" ??

Sucks nevertheless, curious what degree, IF any, alcohol had to do with it.

.. that's terrible particularly given the guy may not have realized the danger he was in while the other guys were effectively detonating IED's about 1/3 the "safe" distance clearly documented by the manufacturer for the naked target... (that is, not wrapped in bits of scrap metal that suddenly become shrapnel when you detonate a pound of explosives inside...).

Probably no alcohol involved here either.

It's not the LAWS you necessarily have to worry about, it's how the laws are regulated.

This is why we always read the safety information, and then obey it.

Sad to see someone learn the hard way and provide a reminder for everyone else.

http://www.kttc.com/story/23698142/2013/10/15/grand-jury-no-charges-in-fillmore-county-death

Authorities say no charges will be filed after a freak accident over the summer left one man dead and his family in mourning.

A grand jury has reviewed the case and determined that no crime was committed.

(Sheriff) Jensen said that in this case the Tannerite was “used with other materials” in a manner that was not included in the manufacturer’s recommendations. He said the individual who fired the shot that detonated the explosive “just happened to be the next in line to shoot,” and while alcohol was present at the party, “we don’t feel alcohol contributed to the result.”

That's one of the reasons I haven't bought some of the resetting targets that are sold in most stores. They say a minimun of thirty yards. Granted if I can hit them consistently at that distance my skills have improved, but the learning curve probably is slow. Paper targets and a backstop are much more peferable for me.

to quote the article from Rochester

" "Something was added, some metal, and that created the problem," the sheriff said."

Clearly against Manufacturers Recommendations, and clearly too close to the target plus some alcohol and Wow a "Tragedy" happens? It is no tragedy it is human stupidity and unfortunately the wrong person was mistaken for the idiot. Sometimes Darwin misses his mark I guess. That is the real tragedy.

Explosives behave so much differently than anything else people have ever used. They have no concept of how dangerous they can be...is. YouTube "Tannerite Near Miss" and watch...
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.
