Would iron sights on a .223 be ok for 100+ yard shots on coyotes or should a scope be used to ensure a humane kill?

How good are your eyes? and, how good a shot are you?
I will never apologize for being an American.

I still love my 22 Hornets.

Much quieter than a 223/5.56. Great 150/200 yard gun for coyotes, 'coon, woodchucks & crows.
Because I care, I carry.

I picked up a Savage 93r17 .17HMR today at frontiersman. I opted for the .17 cuz I feel like it is a bad idea to shoot a .223 in the trees at squirrels. THe .17 is more versatile. If I buy a centerfire then it will be a .243 so I can deer hunt with it as well. Pics coming soon. Good lookin gun.

I picked up a Savage 17hmr this summer, they are a lot better than the others on the market. I have not hunted with it though. I would keep the shots close if you can, a Yote is a pretty big animal for the 17HMR. But it should beet a 22 hands down.

The 243 rocks as an all around caliber. I have not deer hunted with it in a long time but still like to varmint hunt with it. It's one of only two of my guns that has a name, I call it the "laser beam". I like the 65-75gr bullets for shots out to about 400 yards. The prairie dogs do not like it much. It just leaves paws and tails, every thing else is just red mist inside of 150 yards.

I think it will get the job done. No different than bow-hunting. It's all about shot placement. I should be shootin it tomorrow hopefully.

It is actually quite the opposite of bow hunting. The 17HMR is designed for shallow wound cavities, nearly explosive like. A shot can be made in the right spot but the wound cavity be to shallow to provide a clean kill. Just something to think about. A larger caliber round or even 22mag would have significantly more penetration than a 17HMR. On a target the size of a yote you need some penetration for a clean kill. The question is will the 17 cut it?? It will kill them without a doubt, but how humanly. That's why I suggested keeping the shots close, the shock wave may be enough to shut down the organs even if the bullet fragments to not reach them.

In my experience a .17 HMR is great for shooting crows and varmints smaller than a raccoon. I popped a raccoon once with mine at 150 yards and had to run after it and put it down. They just don't penetrate all that well, and if they hit a bone, forget about it. They are quite accurate, but just not much in the terminal ballistics area.

The .17 Mach 2 is something I would think would be a good squirrel gun as those little bullets lose energy quickly.

For most varmints nothing beats the good old .22 Long Rifle. With a good semi auto, you can devastate a varmint pack, and they penetrate surprisingly well.

I like the .22 short for quietly killing varmints, but its still a gun...

The .22 WMR is pretty good, but it isn't cheap or particularly easy to find ammo for.

I think if you handload, a .22 center fire of some sort is the answer for coyotes- you can handload them to whatever level you want, and use a solid bullet if you want to save the pelt.

I also would not dis the shotgun for coyotes. That hevishot dead coyote ammo (tungsten T shot) works well. I know a guy who killed one at 150 yards with that stuff, but it is pretty spendy and will gouge shotgun barrels.

Good luck with the HMR. I still use mine, but not on anything I want to eat or over 100 yards (except paper...)
