Take the areas of the world that are in active conflict out of the equation, and he has a point. America is not the most armed nation, but we have more than our share of gun related issues. Though the fix isnt to get rid of the guns (as shown by the other heavily armed nations in the world) it is to fix all the stupid people. Go back to family values instead of letting the TV raise our kids, things of that nature. Of course that means personal responsibility and we all know there is a large segment of the population that will never do that because we got too far away from those values. BTW, the "large segment" grouping has no other factor other than a boolean check for willing to take personal responsibility.

I generally dislike Michael Moore, and I thought Bowling for Columbine, in particular, was an awful piece of filmmaking, but I think there is merit to the question he's posing in the linked article (that is, why Americans in particular commit so many gun-related crimes relative to other countries which also have widespread private gun ownership). One of my undergrad psych professors, Frank Farley, theorizes that because America consists almost entirely of immigrants or their descendents. and our country was literally founded by revolutionaries, we are as a whole a relatively thrillseeking culture, and disposed toward high-risk, exciting activities relative to other nations. I think there is some validity to this, though arguably the same could be said of some other nations with less predisposition toward gun violence.
