Basic training class for 9-10 year old?

Postby mnxd9 on Tue Dec 31, 2013 12:03 pm

So my nephew has an airsoft gun, and after discussing with him about gun safety and such, I don't feel he has good training, and could really benefit from a real class.

I don't know if I really feel I can give a proper lesson for a kid, and it might have some different impact given in a more formal class.

So I've come to ask for suggestions, I think it wouldn't hurt me any if I could attend the class with him, my oldest is 7 now and they have some basic rules, but they haven't had much exposure, and the time is coming that will change.

Minnesota Firearms Safety / Hunters Education requires that you be at least 11 years old to take the state sponsored course.

I do training for the Boy Scouts and although it is not just a shooting class, we provide safety training, explain they various types of guns(rifles, handguns, rifles), we also discuss the mechanics of ammunition and get the youth to understand who and why things work they way they do, then the safety seems to stick better. We follow this up with 22 rifle range time.

Or...something less formal may work for you:

With my kids, it seemed like hearing the rules from someone they saw as an expert for working at a range did the trick. They heard the same things from me, but it reinforced them.
