Thank you.

It’s a basic steel challenge competion. If you have never shot competion before it is a perfect place to start. You have to be SAFE and know basic handling skills. You will have fun.

What is the format used? Similar to USPSA or IDPA?
I was told that you can use 22LR rifles. I figure that is the only open Saturday I see that conflicts with no other matches so I wanted to do something as my free Saturdays are usually reserved for other matches.

Yeah, you can google "Steel Challenge" for the basics of this style of competition, and here's a search to narrow down the bazillion posts about it here: search.php?keywords=bang+ping&terms=all&author=selurcspi&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=posts&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

But all you really need to know is, do what the RO tells you and you will have fun.

There's a lot of time waiting for your turn to shoot, but that's not all bad 'cause you can see how the other guys do it, and ask questions. The gun & gear people are wearing is a great conversation starter:

"I see you're carrying what looks like 300 rounds worth of mags on your belt. You must really miss a lot!"

"That's a beautiful gun! Are you rich or do you just not care about anything else?"

"I see you are shooting a revolver against all these semiautos. Are you really cheap or just dumb?"

Just about everything you need to know about it can be found in this thread

As for using 22lr rifles, I don't know who told you that, but they're WAAAAAY off base. You need something that will knock down a medium sized popper (large popper if you shoot Man v Man), and a .22lr just doesn't have that kind of oomph. I wouldn't go with anything less than a .38 spl (possibly a .380 if you don't plan on shooting the MvM).

Maybe someone was thinking about the ruger rimfire challenge...

You may be thinking of the steel matches up in Harris at Gopher Rifle and Revolver.
22 rifles and pistols are allowed as there are no falling steel targets. Pistol caliber carbines are also welcome.
Yeah, but I shoot with THIS hand.

4 targets and one stop plate(target), fastest man wins. Sometimes there is a bonus target way off in the corner. There are 4 individual stages of targets, each a little different. Some may require strong hang or weak hand use. Most are free style. Very few rules, just be safe. Plan on 9mm minimum.

Nothing like IDPA or USPSA, more similar to steel challenge.

They are a fun little match. I made it over to the last one of the season last fall. Really enjoyed the man V. man portion of the match. If you've ever wanted to try out a 3GN style shoot off using only a pistol, this is the place to go.

4 stages, 4 strings of fire at each stage, best 3 times at each stage. No power factor, no classes, no movement just a shooting box.

Once the 4 stages are complete, they run a man vs man competition with a tournament style bracket. Run to a shooting box, draw and engage three poppers, mandatory reload, and then engage a final popper. First final steel to fall wins.
