Shooting on your own property (country)

Postby Bearcatrp on Mon May 19, 2014 3:57 pm

Does minnesota have any specific regulations on target shooting on your own property out in the country (out of city limits)? Burms, times, etc.. I have never heard of any regulations but would like to know the facts.

I'm going to guess....there could be local restrictions that are specific but that state restrictions don't include berms / fencing / warning signs but employ the umbrellla concept of 'in a safe manner' that would cover just about any potential shortcoming they could grind you with.

Other than the DNR hunting regs...there are no statewide regs regarding shooting on private land. Local cities, townships and counties may have different regulations and may limit times, locations, etc...

Generally, be smart and don't ruin it for the rest of us! ;) Berms, backstop, don't be a jackwad (ie. Exploding targets and mag dumps all night every night), etc....
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

We are not hunting. Just target shooting on private property. I did read though it though. Nothing in there for private property target shooting.

You should have a friendly chat with your rural neighbors and let them know that you will be doing some target practice on your land.
You could also call and ask your local Sheriff about any regulations.
I'm sure the phone # is on the county website.

I'm lucky in the fact that almost all my neighbors like to shoot. It spreads like a plague around here. It will go from a few rounds going off in the distance to gunfire from all directions in a matter of minutes. Kinda like coyote locater calls.

Makarov's got it right. I've got a friend (some of you know him, but no names, please) that has had a range on his property for years. A few years ago, a developer built him a new one (free...he didn't want the sound of gunfire so close to his high $$$ development) so the sound of gunfire "shifted." Other neighbors objected and called the Sheriff's office. He voluntarily shut down while they looked into it.

Seems that in the county where he lives doesn't have any regulations on private ranges, only commercial ones. So he resumed operation, but at a lower key (no more classes held there). He worked with his neighbors to the betterment of all.

Bottom line is, you may be in the right, but your actions influence others. His neighbors turned out to be nice folks, just ignorant of our "culture." That's changing.

So go visiting, and be polite. Maybe even invite your neighbors to a Guns-n-Q (you supply the range, they supply the food). ;)

Good luck.

It will be found in the town or township regs. You can shoot on your own land in Afton, but if you cross Manning Ave. to the west and fire off one round, the Woodbury Police will respond quickly and probably massively.

And Skyrock is right - just because it's legal doesn't mean that you can do it without pissing off all the neighbors around you. I live on 96 acres in Afton, and COULD shoot on my land all I wanted, but I never do except for shooting tree rodents because I am on the rim of Valley Creek Valley itself, and if I shoot anything above a .22 probably 60 - 70 households can hear it. Occasionally, there is some dickhead in the valley who will piss me off by firing box after box of 9mm or 40 ammo for an extended period of time, and then I have to get out the Smith 500 or the 338 Ultramag to fire off a couple of monster loads to let the people down below the Big Dog up above is getting tired of their pop-pop-popping...

Good advice to NOT piss off the neighbors. While it may be completely legal in your township/county, all it takes is a few pissed off neighbors to go to the next city council/county board meeting and get a rule change. Bingo...no more shooting allowed.

^ This. Especially if its seasonal or recreational property -- you may not even get the notice of the proposed ordinance.

Good to hear the spirit of Hunter S Thompson is alive and well in Afton :bravo:

I just shoot out my back door. Never had a problem.

Only time I had an issue was when I wasn't on my own property. When out to the "coffee grounds" near Hibbing MN to shoot with a friend. We didn't even two magazines into shooting when we heard the local pd racing down the street. We cut that range session early...

I've heard stories of people getting arrested lately not because of shooting in the area but just because now it's posted for no trespassing.
