Bought from there before.

Also there is a guy who owns a Vet clinic in Stillwater that sells M1 food. His prices are what you will find everywhere else, so no deals. But he is a nice guy and easy to work with. He will sometimes list stuff on Armslist.

If you're gonna have two, you need a third to be able to use the stacking clips :D

Well he was selling ammo. I don't remember exactly what he had, but what I was interested in and bought off of him was some AP .30 06. If I remember correctly he said his son and him where into competition shoot, and would travel around. But now his son is grown and they no longer do it, so he was selling things off.

I'm not sure if he still has ammo, or what he has. I do have his name and email, but I don't feel comfortable just putting that out there. My guess is if you put a WTB list on Armslist, there is a decent chance he might see it.

Bringing this thread back to life.

Anyone know of a place locally (twin cities) that has any used original M1 stocks for sale? eBay and cmp forum offerings are hard to decipher true condition of. Would like to inspect with my own eyes before I buy if possible. Thanks.

If you do not have any luck locally try Dupage trading.

You might want to try the two DAS stamped stocks for $100.

There is a thread on the CMP forum about them now.

For that price you can practice your stock refinishing techniques.

A good product to get a nice finish on an old stock is the USSR Service Rifle Stain that this fellow sells off the CMP forum.

Be aware that the original 30-06 loading for the M1 was 150 grain bullets. Not 168's, and not 180's. Stuff I have read says the M1 was designed for 150 grain bullets, and anything more puts undue strain on the gun. Take the advice for what it's worth.

Powder burn rate is more critical than bullet weight for the Garand. The Marine Corps won a lot of inter-service matches in the post war years using AP ammo in their M1's, and IIRC those AP bullets ran 172gr.

As an aside, Creedmoor Sports is having a internet buyers club sale on their new house brand ammo. $1.15 a round is a good deal when you consider they're using $1.50 in Lapua components.

I have been reloading 168gr Nosler Custom Competition BTHP with 45.5gr of 4895.

This is the load that Garand shooters I know are using, and also the gang at the CMP forum recommended.

I have been shooting this load with amazing results.

The other day, I shot some CMP Greek loads, then shot my 168gr reloads right after. My reloads where actually milder recoil.

After asking questions and researching this, I found out that there is nothing secret about reloading for the Garand.
The CMP forum gang had everything set up for me. All that I had to do is find the most accurate load using 4895. All of the testing was between 44gr-47gr. I found for my Garand 45.5gr was the best load. Oal, bullet seating etc. can be found in reloading books and, once again, the CMP forum

Here's a pdf of an old American Rifleman article from 1986 about reloading for the M1.

http://home.comcast.net/~jlemons01/ReloadingForTheM1Rifle_JohnRClarke.pdf

This is almost a 30 year old article, powders may have changed over that time so the usual disclaimer applies. (start low & work up)
