Had the opportunity today...

Postby Drewski on Tue Jul 22, 2014 7:47 pm

To learn the basics of chasing the red dot from Murphy and then learning the basics of reloading some 9mm and 223 from OldmanFCSA. Very informative day for a complete newbie. I highly recommend anyone like me starting from the ground up to gain some valuable exposure from learning safety first all the way up to firing the first round.

Lots of knowledge there and he explains things in way that makes it all come together and make sense.

Thanks again D and M for your time and schooling.

(I'll stick to my pea shooters for awhile before moving up to cannons though) :D

When you want to shoot some cannons let me know. I have a few...

Good to see you get into reloading.

As someone who does not reload (yet)... the first thing I thought of when I read this is Murphy is a cat and you are learning to chase a laser pointer.

Years ago, like 4, I bought a pair of Crimson Trace laser grips for my Beretta 96. After installing on grip frame, i used it as a learning tool to control my trigger pull. Place laser on a target, pull the trigger without moving the laser dot off the target. This was done as dry fire in my basement. Didn't take long for my Basset Hound puppy to notice the red dot and then to chase and howl at it. Later while going thru some of my office supplies after moving out here, I found my office laser pointer and then used it to further tease my puppy/dog. He enjoys it, waits for it, and if someone has a pistol in their hands, he goes "on-point" looking for where the red dot will appear. Afterwards he retreats to his favorite recliner for rest and relaxation, which he is very good at.

He asked about size of grains of powder and how it relates to burn rate. So we compared 4.2 grains of Bullseye that we used on the 9mm, to the 23.2 grains of H335 that I was using on the 223REM, to the 252 grains of V.V.20N29 cannon powder that I use on my 50BMG target loadings. It was an educational process that all reloaders should learn. I showed him one of target rifles and the barrel blanks I use for these rifles.

He was invited back and instructed to bring his son next time. My students are almost always allowed to use my equipment for I know I will never wear it out in my lifetime.

And we had a great talk about life in general while discussing reloading topics.

I enjoy teaching RELOADING BASICS and welcome anyone to attend to learn/teach each other new techniques. (I learn from these sessions also.)

If you want to get into reloading the RIGHT way and do it safely from the beginning, rather than Effing up somewhere down the line to learn the hard way, Oldman is THE best resource there is. Provided you RTFM first and don't want to do something nuts like reloading 10mm ammo to unheard of velocities, he will be glad to help you. You will NOT get a better opportunity to learn reloading than this one.
