My first permit class was with Darrell "Ugly Del" Mulroy in the late 90's (98 maybe?). I became a permit instructor under him in 2001.

As a martial artist, I was under the understanding that if I trained a technique a lot I would develop "muscle memory" and be able to do it in a real situation. He challenged me on that thinking and I first learned about gross vs fine motor skills and the fact that in some circumstances our well trained skills will not be what we assumed.

He ruffled a lot of feathers, had his faults, but I respect what he was trying to do.

But don't they train you pretty well on firearms?

Active duty Navy: NOT A SINGLE HOUR (4 years). In 1991 our boot camp (San Diego) gun range was getting work done, and on a ship the only guys that get regular training were security guys. The duty watch could get basic training (point gun toward enemy - pull trigger - repeat if necessary). I was a Culinary Specialist (cook for you Army guys) = no watch duty requiring a pistol qual.

Air Force may be the same. Army and Marine Corps are different, their job is to carry a gun!

A: They train to take the beach, take the hill, and take no prisoners.

Q: How does the USN fight?
A: Go to sea, drink coffee, and deploy Marines!

There need to be a lot more options than 6, I've done that many in the last 2 years. I like to have outside instructors look at my skills and sort out the bad things I'm doing. Just when I get rid of one bad quirk, I learn something else.

I'm curious as to how "little" training people have, not how much.

I'm honestly surprised there aren't more people picking option zero, And I feel that others are embarrassed to vote their zero which they shouldn't be... Everyone was at a zero at some point. I was hoping to get more votes than this. On the first day there were 133 views and 9 votes.

This is the reason I didn't want anyone to post anything but their votes.

I don't know if gamer training counts so I am not voting not wanting to mess up your results.

No real formal shooting training that I can think of....but I can generally hold my own in any type of competition from trap shooting to 3-gun.

I would enjoy some professional training, but there a couple things that keep me from signing up. One is time, I already shoot the MN3gun group matches, the FMPSA 3gun matches, run our pistol matches here in Morris, shoot clays Tuesdays and Thursdays and also shoot the occasional F-class match.On top of that I try to hit at least 2-3 major 3-gun matches every year. With a 2 year old son to help raise, place out in the country to maintain and the desire to stay married, I have to pick my battles. Second is cost. I'd love to go to the Vogel class, but at $450, +ammo, hotel and travel cost, I would rather use that cash for another major match. Training vs. a match....I'm going to take the match. Plus at a match I usually walk away with something from the prize table equal to or greater than my entry fee and I love free gun stuff.

I likewise had Darrell as a PTC instructor back in... 2001? Something like that. Before that, it was an in-house guy for the private security company I worked for in the 80's.

Do multiples of the same class count? For example PTC, twice. And would unique instructors at each make a difference in that answer?

I believe that the OP is referring to firearms training that teaches a person how to shoot a firearm. I wouldn't consider a PTC class to fall into that category. A PTC isn't a class that teaches you how to shoot, it's a class that teaches you when you are lawfully allowed to shoot. There will be a brief discussion of fundamentals, but it's so minimal that I wouldn't consider it as anything more than a 20,000 foot overview.

There may be some briefing or classroom time in an actual "how to shoot" class, but the training is almost entirely on the range, with an instructor running a series of drills to identify weaknesses and errors, and to develop and reinforce proper technique. Typically these are multi-student classes that are from 4-8 hours per day, and can be several days long. One-on-one training with an instructor is typically 2-4 hours long. After completion students are typically issued a certificate of completion of some kind, indicating the class name/shooting discipline that they attended.

If you haven't taken this kind of shooting class, then you haven't received formal training on how to shoot. It doesn't mean you can't shoot well, just that you haven't taken a training class on how to shoot.
