I added some new stainless to my stainless springfield

So here's how the gun sat a few days ago. (please excuse my semi-poor fitment of the Grip Safety, it was my first)

But then I pull it out to go shooting and I see this on the Mainspring?? Pretty poor stainless when it rusts after about 2mo of storage and wiped down with CLP. I had seen a bit earlier but polished it out. It came back worse.

So I went looking for a new mainspring, and came across this ed brown piece and thought it would match nice with the grips. While the old one with the magwell looked and fit well, it was not a great match to the bottom of the grips or the frame magwell.

I am very happy with how it turned out, and my fitment is a much better job then I did with the safety. I had to trim down the corners of the frame a bit, which I did with a small file. I then sanded the bottom plain and the corner for a smooth fit. I then polished all worked surfaces. I plan to have the bead-blasted areas cleaned up in the future, but for now, that is not available. I am considering sending it to springfeild to redo the safety and bead blasted areas. But for now, I just bought a S&W MP9 Ported, so that will have to wait.

A bit of extra grip doesn't hurt either.

Not all stainless steel is corrosion proof. Also, that's not really rust...looks more like something attacked the metal and corroded it. Stainless steel is made with a varying degree of nickle and a lot of bore cleaners and other chemicals will eat nickle for breakfast. Just saying..... :)

No stainless steal is corrosion proof.

After filing, sanding or polishing the SS parts you may have to passivate them to bring the corrosion resistance back.

The old mainspring, and the current safety are Smith & Alexander parts. I only had the corrosion on the housing, and only on the one side. I'm thinking there was some contaminant in the casting. I clean my guns with 3M non chlorinated brake cleaner. If I got some nasty hard stuff, I'll soak the part in MMO for a few days first. All items are wiped with CLP after cleaning, the rails are lubed with AC Delco superlube (a high temp Teflon grease). I leave ZERO carbon on this gun, besides the discoloration on the inside of the bore, it is kept in a "like new" state of cleanliness, inside and out.

What is passivate? Never heard of it.

You are correct. Sorry about that, I meant to say corrosion resistant. :)

Stain less. Not stain not at all, never, nada, zilch.
For further reading, look up salt spray test or 300 series stainless steel.

Its a process for removing contamination from the surface of the metal
