Gun serial numbers in videos?

I've never understood the whole serial number thing. I mean, I've read reasons for it online, but I've never heard of a believable instance of sneakiness. If it were an issue, why wouldn't criminals just go to gun stores and copy down dozens of serial numbers and use them for whatever bad things they want to use them?
