Oakdale yardage discrepancy

Postby Snowgun on Sat Aug 29, 2015 4:43 pm

So, i know all about the fact that the 200 yd range is secretly a 200m range, and that oakdale has it mislabeled. But a buddy of mine apparently has been trying to work loads up there for 3 years before someone told him it was "off".

He is livid. (Im ashamed to admit i thought this was hilarious). He was going crazy wondering why all his calculations were wrong.

Sooo, he was wondering if anyone here who goes to the meetings or who is on the board might consider bringing up a possible name change (like, switch yrd with meter). Or if there is some sort of reason for the bait and switch...

The sign outside the range says 200 "yards" for those who don't understand "meters" (200 meters is 218 yards approx). It is properly labeled on the website and is known as Meters by most members. The range was originally setup for IHMSA steel matches for 50, 100, 150, & 200 meter handgun targets.

Wondering why his calculations were wrong? seriously? What were they off by, a half a bullet diameter?

Sounds like your buddy either likes to complain or he's looking for an excuse as to why his pet rifle and load don't shoot up to his expectations.

Or he doesn't shoot to the rifle's expectations.

I don't know much about rifles but this is curious, when attempting to sign onto OGC's website:

Won't even show me the sign on screen. I get the msg I posted earlier when I click on any option under MEMBERS.

I sent OGC an email. I am current on my range doody.

Does your home page show the 'log in' tab above the club emblem?

Yep, you are correct about the sign at the range entrance.
I just stopped out for 'Silencer Day' and made a point of checking.
I never noticed before that it was anything other than '200', much less that it's wrong.
That helps explain why I'm so tired after range doody.

They should fix the sign to say meters, but yeah, sounds like the guy's looking for excuses. I suppose if he's shooting .45-70 or something like that, that's really dropping fast at 200 yards, it might matter.

Oakdale yardage discrepancy

Postby gaberelli on Sun Aug 30, 2015 5:00 pm

If the gun is a .308 shooting 175 gr. SMK and zeroed at 100 yds, the difference in drop between 200 and 218 yds is 0.4". If zeroed at 200 yds vs. zeroed at 218 yds., the difference at 500 yds. Is 2.5"....

Heinous typos thanks to autocorrect.
