Anyone willing to allow UMN Students to shoot on their land?

Postby FlyingKat316 on Sun Nov 06, 2016 3:08 pm

Hey everyone,

I started an unofficial trapshooting club here at the U and currently we are looking for a place to shoot. As many of us are students, we have little disposable income to spend $10 a round at the various clubs in the area. I am wondering if anyone has some land that they would allow us to use for trapshooting near the cities. Thank you!

If I had land, I would work out a deal. Maybe you should talk to the local ranges about sponsoring your club. I would think they just might be willing to do that since it would promote their business with a large group of shooters. Start writing up proposals with what the club might have to offer a range, and start knocking on doors.

This, by finding a range it'll add legitimacy and potentially allow for expansion. Find an off peak time that works for your group.

Way back the U had a range out at U More Park in Rosemount, is that not still around ? I know there are several other ranges down there. If we were closer I know our club would let you shoot for cost of clays only, but I don't think you want to drive to far southern MN. Check with some of the local high school teams see were they are shooting, maybe you can catch a break that way. Good luck.

Here is a thread about that range. Too much red tape to be an option, unfortunately. UofM Firearms Range - Rosemount, MN

I agree that you should start calling/emailing local gun clubs. Start with the nearest and work your way out. I think someone will be willing to accomodate you.

The High School Trap phenomenon has tied up nearly every available club's time in the state. Some clubs are expanding to accommodate the boom - but near to the metro makes it harder.

Good luck.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Thank you everyone for the responses! I am going to get to work on finding a range that might let us use it.

Gopher campfire and rainbow Sportsman's allow you to throw your own trap. Membership is around $40 a year. Both are good ranges but I shoot at gopher more.

Nope not that one- there was a range that was used by students, educators, etc. - maybe they morphed it into the above range I dunno!

I sincerely hope I'm wrong! Is there more than one range in Rosemount that is also managed by the U?

Trap, skeet, and 5-stand are all $6/round @ BESA. It's a bit of a drive from campus, but it's at least less expensive than the $10 you're quoting. Might be a decent option if you can't find something cheaper.

I believe high school leagues pay $8 per round to shoot at Metro in Blaine. Could try and work out something similar with them.

You can try out Beaverbrook gun club in East Bethel, I think they are $8 per round and there is a skeet range there as well. If your a member it is like $3 right now but that will change soon.
There is a Frisbee golf coarse near there to so you and your friends could make it a day trip and spend the day at both places and not have to drive a long way out.

I think their web page is http://www.beaverbrook.us or google them, they are usually right on top of the search results.

Oakdale added 2 trap ranges, shouldn't be hard to get in there.
