Building a dedicated 22 upper

Postby silverado chevy on Thu Mar 29, 2018 9:29 am

Building a dedicated 22 AR upper for my conversion kit...I can use a 1:7 twist or a 1:9 twist barrel from my spare parts box. Anyone have an opinion on what will be more accurate?

Considering a 22LR barrel is typically 1:16 twist I would go with the 1:9. Depending on what kind of accuracy you are looking for though you might find yourself having to buy a dedicated 22LR barrel.

If you're building a dedicated upper for rimfire, I would highly recommend a 22LR specific barrel. Not only will the twist rate be correct for the projectiles but a dedicated barrel will have the correct chamber/collar that will mate to your conversion bolt. With a 5.56-style chamber, your conversion bolt will have to run the adapter that looks like cartridge. TACCOM is a pretty good source for reasonable dedicated barrels and they include the rimfire collar that replaces the cartridge adapter.

TACCOM does not seem to sell anything 22LR anymore.

Interesting. I literally just bought an 8" 22LR barrel from them in the middle of January. I would contact them to see if they've actually stopped or just pulled them off the website if they are out of stock. CMMG would be another option for barrels, though.

Taccom, sells good stuff. That is if they still have the 22lr items. If not cmmg sells barrels and bolts online. I am assuming you are creating short barrel suppressor host.

If not S&W M&P22 for $350 is a good option. Or have you considered Ruger charger with pistol brace? Much cheaper than building a 22lr upper from scratch.

I have the taccom barrel and taccom bolt. Very little stoppages. Almost as reliable as 10/22.

FWIW, I looked into this a while back and just bought a M&P 15-22. The entire thing was cheaper than a good 22LR upper.

And the S&W M&P15-22 runs just like a regular AR-15, the same operation for the safety, magazine release, etc. Training on it is cheap and muscle memory is 100% transferable to its big brother AR.

Ugh. Great. Now I made the mistake of watching a few videos on the M&P15-22 and have quickly determined that I must have one.

Question for those that have a S&W M&P 15-22...
Will standard aftermarket charging handles work in those?

Like the BCM or Raptors?

I don’t think so. It’s kind of goofy. I’ll try to post a picture of mine. It’s a fun AR to shoot.
