Lyman hand primer issue?

Postby FJ540 on Thu Feb 21, 2019 6:15 pm

Just got one of these to upgrade my first generation Lee hand primer since the Lee won't fit 338 Lapua heads. After assembling it with a Redding shell holder, it won't seat the primers even flush. They're a good 5-7 thou proud of the case.

Is this a common flaw? Seems like tolerance stacking could be to blame if the handle pivot pin hole was off, the primer insertion rod was short, and or the transfer bar from the handle was too short.

There's a casting flash ridge right on the lever paddle, so I'm tempted to return the thing anyway. Just curious if anyone else has seen or heard of this?

I also had as many as 3 large rile primers stack up in the loading chute within the first hundred cases. I've never had that happen with the Lee.

Reading reviews on Midway's site, it looks like guys have had issues with the small primer plunger not being long enough for .223. The reviewer's solution was to gut the plunger out of his old Lee Auto-prime, which reportedly resulted in bottoming the primer at 80% of handle stroke (which seems too soon to me).

I guess this is par for the course with this product. Now to decide if I want to try fixing it or send it back.

I have the Lyman Ezee Prime and haven't had any issues with it. You're welcome to try it, and compare it to yours, if you want to.

I bet it's easily fixed with a new plunger. I can crank one out on the lathe easy enough.

I also have a Lyman Ezee Prime, bought to replace the extinct old Lee one. Using rcbs shell holders, and it seems fine. Not as nice or quick as the old lee, but better than the new double pump lee auto prime.

Either send it back and quit bitching,

OR IF you know a good machinist - make a new properly designed part to enable proper operation of the assembly.

Oh HI Jim, forgot it was you.

Myself if casting is bad - send it back. Otherwise I have made small parts to remedy poor part designs in some reloading equipment.

I didn't think to grab some tiny stainless round stock (or a long bolt would've worked), so I tig welded the transfer bar end of the plunger to build it up, then turned it back down to diameter and put a flat end on it. Then I chamfered the business end a touch so it self-centers in the pocket.

We've got a functional tool now!

Maybe I should bring mine to you, for the updated modification :cogitating:
