New York City tries to Amend Gun Laws to Avoid SCOTUS Showdown
John Crump at Ammoland wrote:New York City –-(Ammoland.com)-The Supreme Court recently took up the first Second Amendment related case since the historic decision in D.C v Heller. In this new case, the New York Pistol and Rifle Association with the backing & legal guidance of the NRA is suing the city of New York over their law, preventing law-abiding citizens from transporting firearms outside the city limits. Currently, residents can only use one of seven ranges within the city’s boundaries.

According to the New York Times, the New York Police Department held a public hearing on amending the law, and they have taken written comments. New York politicians are fearful of taking the blame if the Supreme Court rules against the law, which would then affect gun laws across the entire country.

The unusual public hearing is a requirement before the city can amend the law. At the hearing and in the written comments, gun rights advocates attacked the city's motives as a blatant attempt at trying to make the court case disappear.

Remember this, the next time some gun banner brings up how "reasonable" their demands are.

NYC could have been reasonable, at any point in their decade's long legal fight over this issue.

They didn't want to be.

The only reason they're willing to compromise now is so that they can preserve their ability to be unreasonable in the future.

Reasonable gun control is hitting your intended target.

Just the sort of clever legal maneuvering you could expect. I don't think we can expect a slip up, the anti crowd is very well coordinated and fully versed in the art of legal and political obstructionism.

Personally, I think the individuality of spirit exemplified by the notion of Second Amendment Rights is a barrier to full coordination.

The Left can't abide individuality.

It sometimes seems that there's a correlation between big-city government- especially political "machines" and the gun control agenda. Aside from the fact that many large cities are crime ridden (which even a total ban on all guns wouldn't prevent), there seem to be a general contempt towards the Great Unwashed; that civic leaders see it as their job to "manage" the ignorant plebes, and in general to tell the peasants to shut up and do what they're told.

As far back as 1911 New York state gave us the Sullivan Act, named for Tammany Hall alumnus Timothy Sullivan, which was mostly enforced against "those people" (namely Italians) who were seen as too violent to be allowed to carry guns. At least according to some rumors it was so that the Irish gangs paying bribes to the politicians would have unarmed victims to shake down. Crime in New York City went up the year after it was passed.

Chicago? The Daleys; 'nuff said. D.C., St. Louis, Los Angeles, etc. In general, big city government wants compliant sheep and are the biggest boosters of gun control. Bloomberg is just the latest would-be Duke of New York.

This case has great potential to be a big win for 2A. I have a good feeling about it going to the SC.

Have you read David Hardy&Joe Olson's amicus brief?

This could mean an end to waffling on Heller & McDonald.
