1911s

Postby Grayskies on Sun Jun 02, 2019 9:38 pm

My first handgun was a Springfield 1911, Loved the feel and shooting her, tho she had issues.

I was thinking about buying another, but they are so expensive and I worry about jamming and such.

Are there any 1911s out there, sub $1,000, guns that I could trust enough to carry?

And since they get finicky with hollow points would the be a alternative besides FMJs?

I no longer have it but my Springfield was trouble free. My kimber that I still have has been trouble free for many years after initial ejector repair. If it's feel and reliability your looking for the CZ line has that 1911 feel although mostly in 9mm. If going to their 45 series I prefer the Sar K2 as it is double stack.

My first 1911 was the S&W E Series that has been trouble free with any ammo I tried in it. It has a long list of features for the price, so seems like a good value to me. It does not have bullseye accuracy.

After that I have gone through a few Springfields. All were reliable with FMJ and that is the only type of ammo I ran through them. Springfield is known for their good customer service so I would not hesitate to buy one. Champion Operator was a great smaller/lighter package.

I own several Kimbers and generally, they've been problematic.

I have a number of Springfields - and carried a Springfield TRP full-size 1911 for several years. I would totally recommend any of their 1911s.

The problem with 1911’s is that once you got one, it keeps on working...

The most recent 1911 I brought was a service gun- from 1944.

I’ve got a bunch of them. I’ve really not had much trouble with them. The officer’s model had a tendency to lose its front sight.

Kimber, Colt, STI, Dan Wesson, Baer, Triangle, Wilson, Clark, even an old Norinco, other than some feed ramp polishing and tuning the extractor on the non custom ones, no problems with the gun.

If you get a bad magazine though... most any malfunction can be caused by that.

I hear it is common for the fibri-optic filament from the front site falls out a lot?

Under $1000, get a Sig Sauer 1911. Watch for sales and you can usually get the $1199 Sig's for a couple hundred off. I guess my advice is to get a higher end low price gun. Reeds has some deals on some, no Sig's though.

Sig is expensive, I was looking at the p226 to see what the military is using, twice the cost of a glock!

I like the rail, not sure about the trigger. External extractor is interesting.

You can find a Dan Wesson for the price of some of those Sigs and quality and fit of a DW is considerably higher. If you do not mind a bit more recoil, check out the Vigil model with lightweight frame. Great carry option in commander or CCO size.

From research Dan Wesson has a good name.

I would also advise you to take a look at the Sig. For the price it can’t be beat.
