Rice instead of pins for tumbler

I’ve been using regular white rice in the vibratory tumbler for about the last 18 mo the or so. I used a stainless tumbler since 2010 or so before that, and I can’t imagine that I’ll ever go back to that process. 90 minutes in rice and all brass comes out about a good as walnut, but no dust. Cases aren’t shiny-new looking like with stainless, but the mouths don’t get peened, so I don’t need to chamfer & de-burr after every firing like I used to. In addition to that, not having to dry them is a huge time saver. It’s definitely good enough for the kind of shooting that I do.

I can only guess that you fellas haven't had the hand parched rice right from the reservation. That stuff is like gold. The commercial crap you get in the grocery store is mostly no worth the prep time.

Is the stuff from the rez commercially available? Pricey, I'm guessing.

It's a great irony that today, 'wild rice' is neither rice ( I believe it's a type of wheat) Nor is it wild.[/quote]

Yes expensive if you can find it. My regular sources have dried up, but I have a people on sourcing retainer that keep an eye out. We used to trade out for pasties, porchetta, homemade dill pickles- sometimes we would get a pound with a request for something specific like walkie talkies or potica.

Price varied and I haven't bought for a while but prices were $12-$15 /lb. Preferred to trade out, felt better and more honorable.

I will be trying just plain white rice for my 1st batch. I check primer holes anyways when using my vibrating tumbler so no big deal. Have 2 batches to do so will post my results when I am done.

Rice has got to be a lot more expensive than corn cob!

If it really works almost as well and kills the dust issue, I might try it.

The SS pin method makes the best looking stuff, but it is time consuming...

So are you guys adding anything to the rice? like iosso, or just using it straight?

Some Southern Milk Gravy (my specialty) would be the best

Nope, just plain bull white rice out of a 25# bag from Sam’s club. It was like $13 for the bag, so I can’t imagine that corn cob is much cheaper. Rice doesn’t break down like corn cob, and it cleans better.

Just did my 1st batch. Good enough for reloading. Not sparkling clean like the pins but not looking to win any contest for the shiniest brass. 4 hours. Rice is dirty but should be able to get a few batches done. I'm sold using rice. Now debating if I should sell my FART system.

Did a second batch today, mixed 6.5 CM and 308. The 308 didn't clean as good as I thought it would. 5 hours. The rice was a bit dirty from the 1st batch I did. You folks who use rice throw it after the 1st batch or do multiple cleanings?

I use it for a long time. Probably 4-5 batches at least.

Did you have to increase your cleaning time after each batch as the rice gets dirtier?

No. I usually do 90 minutes, or until I remember to take them out. If they are slightly less clean towards the end of the rice’s life span, I don’t notice it. I cleaned about 1200 308 cases last weekend and the rice was dirty to start with. They all came out looking fine. The shininess has zero impact on performance, and I don’t worry about primer pockets, so “pretty shiny” is good enough.
