Which is better: Vans Bluing or Brownells Oxphoblue?

Postby Bergie on Wed Apr 15, 2020 12:28 pm

I stripped down an old 870 Wingmaster down to bare steel (couldn't get out some rust pits though) and then used brake cleaner to purge all oils, etc. Then used Oxpho-blue gel, followed by the same in liquid form. Between coats, I rubbed with 0000 steel wool. But it still looks splotchy and grey. (?) Would Vans have made it 'bluer'? If so, do I have to start all over again and strip it down? (that'd be a pain)

Did you heat it before applying blue ? I found putting it in 140 degree water in bath tub for 10 minutes - pull out and dry - apply as before. Good luck !!! A rougher surface helps initially for better results - opens pores of metal for a deeper blue.

EDIT - do when wife is out of house for bathtub use.

I get 125 from my faucet and it is actually turned down to just past the vacation setting. I am sure I could get 140 if I wanted.

I had to re-blue some rusty parts on a Marlin model 99 and I used Vans, it came out really nice.
