N. Michigan shooting range closed after bullets hit house

Associated Press

Beulah — A state-run shooting range in northern Michigan has been shut down after bullets hit a house.

The North Pioneer Road shooting area in Benzie County will be closed for 90 days while the Department of Natural Resources looks at ways to prevent people from shooting outside designated areas.

Urban encroachment is a fairly common problem.

Most shooting ranges were established in the middle of nowhere 50 or more years ago. Time has coughs up with them and now need to deal with neighbors. Most don’t have sufficient safety buffer zones and all it takes is one AD or misplaced shot to close them down.

At any indoor range, check out how the walls, ceiling and floor are pockmarked.

Didn't this same thing happen in Elk River a few years ago?

Shooting range? Looks more like a random field that someone cleared brush away.

I'm a terrible shot... wait, that wasn't the actual question.

This happens frequently. As others have said, any firing range will have signs of errant lead flying in seemingly all directions. When I was in corrections and we had to qualify semi-annually with the AR-15 and 12 gauge, we more than one individual shoot both the ceiling and the floor.

RVW makes a good point as well - take Bald Eagle for example. When it was established at its current location, what was around there? Now you've got waaaaaay more homes than there were 60-70 years ago (naturally) and therefore a lot more trouble.

I've been told stories about neighbors complaining (sometimes crying) about nearby shooting ranges at their city council meetings, making outrageous claims and demanding they be closed. My favorite story - and this may be a tall tale but I unfortunately doubt it - is one neighbor bringing in a "bullet" as "evidence" that projectiles were landing in her back yard. She produced a complete cartridge, which she then claimed was shot from the shooting range. Who knows - maybe someone had a huge slingshot?

I believe at OGC we have had one incident that was tried to be blamed on the club but it was proven not to be. We have gone to great lengths and expense to avoid these issues.
