I'm a terrible shot... wait, that wasn't the actual question.
This happens frequently. As others have said, any firing range will have signs of errant lead flying in seemingly all directions. When I was in corrections and we had to qualify semi-annually with the AR-15 and 12 gauge, we more than one individual shoot both the ceiling and the floor.
RVW makes a good point as well - take Bald Eagle for example. When it was established at its current location, what was around there? Now you've got waaaaaay more homes than there were 60-70 years ago (naturally) and therefore a lot more trouble.
I've been told stories about neighbors complaining (sometimes crying) about nearby shooting ranges at their city council meetings, making outrageous claims and demanding they be closed. My favorite story - and this may be a tall tale but I unfortunately doubt it - is one neighbor bringing in a "bullet" as "evidence" that projectiles were landing in her back yard. She produced a complete cartridge, which she then claimed was shot from the shooting range. Who knows - maybe someone had a huge slingshot?
