Save old boxes, or no?

My brother told me many years ago to save my old gun boxes, scope boxes, parts boxes, etc because if I sold that particular item later, it was well worth having the original box. So I’ve saved everything….scope boxes, scope mount boxes, gun boxes, even upper and lower receiver boxes! I’m wallowing in empty boxes. What’s the conventional wisdom out there say? Where does one draw the line on save it vs trash?

I keep only special expensive rifle boxes plus all scope boxes. All my pistols came in a hard case so I keep those too.

I keep a few in case I need to send something in for service but don’t really plan to sell anything. That will be my kids problem.

Unless it has collector value, I don't keep any.

Same here. Have been keeping optic boxes too but shelf is running out of space so need to start tossing some out.

To my mind it is ridiculous but I remember some folk paying a couple hundred dollars for original Colt and S&W handgun boxes. There was even reports of counterfeit box manufacturers.

So I guess for a handgun it would probably pay to save the box but you have to weigh what the box might be worth verses the inconvenience of storing the box for a long time (and then remembering you have the thing and where you stored it).

Under the category of folks with too much time on their hands (and maybe too much money) there are folk that examine the edges of the cardboard and the way it is cut etc., etc.

Much ado about nothing but it really isn't for me to say, whatever floats their boat. For goodness sake, there are folk that think having more than one or two handguns, or rifles or shotguns is crazy. (When you encounter such folk my advice is to just nod and smile and walk away.)

If you have the space to save them, it doesn’t hurt to do so. I’ve sent things back for repair in the original boxes.

If you are a collector, it makes sense for guns you don’t shoot.

Somehow (using a high value rifle as an example) my Dakota .416 Rigby is unlikely to be worth more due to having the original box and tags. It’s had tons of ammo through it, a rebarrel, the stock has lots of damage, and I have shot 20 buffalo with it. It’s maybe 70% retained finish. The box is a nonissue with it.

The SAA I inherited? It has been shot, but it’s been babied. Having the box and tags for that might give an extra 5-10% if I sold it.

If I have to move, I probably will throw most of the boxes out.

Empty boxes take up a lot of space, if you aren’t collecting it to resell and make money. Toss it and make room, I have way too much other junk to store.
