But somehow the news report fails to mention that the "good samaritan" was an armed civilian.

If they had, expect they would have added something like "we remind viewers that this is extremely dangerous and recommend that citizens leave confronting suspects to trained police officers".

ETA: Or maybe they wanted to imply that the bystander talked the attacker down with empathy and understanding.
