Apparently my metaphor isn’t as widely recognized as I thought. ( no internet searches turned up my exact reference)
‘Someone has seen/ heard what’s happened to another in a similar situation, and changes course to avoid a similar fate’…when they ‘heard footsteps’…would be my best attempt at an explanation.
Sometimes used in football…’hearing footsteps’ implying an imminent tackle….
Ultimately they knew what was coming….and backed down.
