woo-hoo!!! Won an auction on Gunbroker.com!!

Postby Seismic Sam on Thu May 07, 2009 12:51 am

Long story short: Local gun dealer had an incredibly rare TZ-75 NIB in 41AE and 9mm, which means two barrels and two mags. Knowing how hard 41AE brass is to buy (like $60 for 50 emppty cases) I initially pass on the gun. Go to a jumble sale of a reloading shop that had been closed for 4 years. The new owner has a 1,000 piece bag of NEW 41 AE cases! Buy the cases, and go back to the gun shop, figuring nobody but me is weird enough to mess with this caliber. The gun had sold a week earler!!

The gun I won (for $400 even) is a rare Tanfoglio GT-41 in hard chrome finish in 41AE. Getting a spare Tanfoglio 9mm barrel and mags should be no problem!!

Thanks. I have to ask though, with these numbers what is the benefit over a .40? Do not get me wrong the odder the chambering the more I love it, but just courious as to if there is any mysitque with this chambering that I need to know about.

Stealing from Wikipedia:
Original IMI factory cartridges are much hotter, pushing a 170gr bullet at 1215ft/s

Ah, I see so approaching .41 mag performance perhaps from a 9mm based auto! I like it! :)

I can see where a this would be a reloaders dream...

And I would think Seismic has some loads that would put those numbers to shame, He has enough money to buy new guns if he blows that one up. :P

And in the latest installment of things 1911 fan has done and not gotten killed or thrown in jail, we have shooting 16 pound bowling balls out of a well casing with gasoline fumes, and perhaps destroying a jeep downrange.

As far as the 41AE is concerned, it is the brainchild of Evan Whildin of Action Arms (also responsible for the 50AE cartridge), and it is a rebated short 41 case with a 9mm rim. It originally allowed you to go from 9mm to 41 caliber with a simple barrel and mag swap. Kind of a cool idea, but the emergence of the 40 S&W killed this cartridge deader than a doornail. In addition, with a case that small, I doubt you can really equal 41 Mag ft-lbs, and I can barely do that with my EAA 45 Super gun, which delivers just shy of 700 ft-lbs.

The one exception to all this is that there were quite a few Uzi barrels chambered in 41AE, and a 41 caliber Uzi is truly a weapon to be reckoned with. They (the gun barrels) are still available on gunbroker.com. I think Larry at Gunstop has one, which is why he bought up all my 41AE brass after my initial plan went bust.

As far as loading the ammo, I plan to duplicate the original hot loads at most, and leave it at that. With a 357 SIG and a 38 Super running 9x23 Win cases, there is the possibility of going over factory specs, particularly with the 38 Super. The guy at Pony Express has actually fessed up to getting 115 grain bullets up to 2,000 fps with a 38 Super, although the primers were flat (meaning no firing pin indent either!! ) and he never tried to use the brass again.

And as far as being rich enough to afford a cheap gun to experiment with, yes, I spent $349 on a NIB EAA 45 with the expectation of maybe having it blow on me as I worked it up to 45 Super. Turns out Tanfoglio guns are ungodly strong, so I have no qualms about having the new gun handling full power 41AE ammo.

And, (AHEM) this slur is coming from Mr. Bowling Ball Cannon, who by his own estimate went through a half mil of plane flights and expensive hotels (plus the booze and babes that went with them...) and never had to pay for any of it. Rich, my ass!!!

and the statute of Limitation is long long over with on all of that, once I got married I have lived a pure (well, somewhat better) life......

And yes, launching bowling balls is a heck of a lot of fun, if you get the holes in the right orientation, they whistle a tune while disappearing from view.....just consider it a piston with no connecting rod, concept is the same....

I was not aware that being "comfortable in ones retirement" was something to be embarrassed about, I apologize if my respect for your financial stability and security somehow offended you. My understanding was that having a driveway long enough to require two tanks of gas to plow while living in a less than undesirable neighborhood was to be interpreted as a positive role model for those of us still attempting to eke out a living in somewhat difficult times. Pardon me for insinuating that your only goal with that new purchase was to push it to the limits of physics and metallurgy. If you would grant me a completely unworthy indulgence I would be most appreciative and would attempt to repay the indebtedness by supplying the C6O2Na4 and a suitable transfer method of C10H14N2
