Where can I get Red Dot powder?

Postby Minnesnotashooter on Mon Aug 26, 2013 8:25 pm

Subject says it all, I used to use american select, but I'm running low but there are still many many clays that need to be shot and I think red dot will perform better plus I heard its a little cheaper. And I live in a little town of St bonifacius(it's near Mound, Waconia, and Victoria if you don't know where it is) my local fleet farm just opened up a reloading isle and I asked and they're getting powders next week sometime but anyone know of a different place near me that sells it? If not i could just wait anyway. Thanks to anyone who replies!

If you are going to go with Red Dot, go cheaper and use Alliant Promo. One can only get it in 8 pound kegs but one uses the same weight of charge as one would use with Red Dot. You will need a scale to check weights as one uses a different bushing for Promo than for Red Dot. I am also surprised that American Select costs more than Red Dot, the last kegs I bought were actually less than the "Dots" by at least $10 and I think it was closer to $20. The last time I bought AS was at Ahlman's during their reloading sale and it was definitely less than the others.

As for where to find it, Wolf's Den and Metro were the last places I bought it but that was a while back. Fleet Farm will only have 1 pound canisters for the next year from what I have been told as that was what their old purchaser decided. It sounds they will give it a year to see how things shake out before trying other sizes of powder containers.

I've used several kegs of Promo since it came out. I like the stuff, especially as it is the cheapest powder I can find on a regular basis. With the way prices have risen over the last few years, Promo has allowed me to shoot more than I would otherwise.

Was at Wolf's Den 8/26 and they had it in a 1 lb can. Don't recall if they had it in an 8lb but they'd tell you if you call.

I'm also looking for bulk Red Dot to be used for fire-forming 50BMG cases without using a projectile.

35 grains of Red Dot with a corn meal stuffer to create enough pressure and resistance to properly form the case to chamber.

Not as much fun as shooting a projectile, but can be accomplished in my back yard without going to a OGC range.

Call Wolf's Den. They had pretty much ALL the Alliant powders this last Saturday, and my vague old brain seems to recall Red Dot sitting there.
