Ammo help

Postby AutomaticAron on Tue Oct 30, 2012 9:46 am

Hello all! I'm gonna be hunting deer with a 223 this year and have a question about ammo. I'm looking at using Hornady Varmint Express 223 with a polymer tip. Is this a legal round for harvesting deer in MN?

Any help appreciated and thanks in advance!

if you're going to be hunting, you *might* want to read the regulation book. this should be about the first thing you would learn by doing so - there's also a bunch of other stuff that follows you should probably be aware of too.

i - or any number of others - could easily give you your answer, but then you wouldn't learn anything else. sorry to sound like a dick, but if you're goign to be running aroudn with a high power rifle shooting at animals in the next - what, 4 days? - you should at least know the basics of the situation.

word.

IIRC, there's something about "expanding" bullets ... **** it, I'll jest copy/paste!

MN DNR wrote:LEGAL FIREARMS (INCLUDES HANDGUNS) FOR BIG GAME

• It is at least .220 caliber and has center fire ignition;

• It is loaded only with single projectile ammunition;

• The projectile used has a soft point or is an expanding bullet type;*

• The muzzleloader (long gun or handgun) used cannot be loaded at the breech (muzzleloading revolvers are not legal for taking big game);

• The smooth-bore muzzleloader used is at least .45 caliber and

• The rifled muzzleloader used is at least .40 caliber;

• Muzzleloaders with scopes are legal during the regular firearms deer seasons, but are not allowed during the muzzleloader season except by special permit for hunters with a medically certified visual impairment. Applications are available from the DNR Info Center, see page 125.

Other Restrictions
• No person may discharge a firearm or an arrow from a bow on, over, across, or within the right-of-way of an improved public highway (including but not limited to federal, state, county, and township roadways) at a big game animal or a decoy of a big game animal that has been set out by a licensed peace officer.
• A person may not use a dog or horse to take big game.

* Note: Hunters are reminded to select bullets that are suitable for taking big game. Most major manufacturers offer either bonded or all-copper bullets that are appropriate for taking big game. Hunters are advised to select a proper bullet design and weight that is suitable for humanely taking big game.

As to the "*", back to the OP's question, I wouldn't expect a "varmint" bullet to perform overly well! :?

Maybe more somethin' like these?! ... http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=210

Just a recommendation here. But you might want to look at something in a soft point with a little bit thicker jacket. That way you get a little bit more expansion on the bullet leaving bigger holes.

The V-max bullets are meant for varmints and fragment on impact. Not ideal for a larger animal such as whitetail.

And no, I am not saying that a .223 is too small for deer :shock:

If'n yaz feel that you have to use a .22 cal bullet,

You really should be using the 5.7 Express round for that.

Come on :x Spend another $5-10 a box and get the RIGHT ammo!! The varmint bullet is legal but if you hit bone it will not penatrate to the vitals. Get a trophy bonded bear claw, partition or Barnes (no not the varmint granade). You will spend more on gas driving to the deer stand so don't worry so much about spending a few bucks on good bullets.

I'd invest in a .25ACP Colt "Vest Pocket" ... less recoil! ;)

.223 is plenty to take down a whitetail.

LEGALLY - yes.

IN REALITY - pretty retarded.

if you're going to hunt, do it right. do it ethically. do it safely.
