I have no guns and ammo that would be of interest to anyone, therefore no reason to stop by when things go south.

We do have a moat, vicious killer bees which only attack strangers, and the ability to catapult infectious disease laden articles across the moat, so don't come trying to steal anything either. (If those things don't get you, hopefully the guns and ammo that I don't have will.)

When the power goes out just look for a house with power.....
They will have plenty of munitions and food.........
Ya can only watch so many doors and windows at a time....

Nope, that's in the third sub-basement next to the bowling alley.

By the time they arrive, it will be too late.

Let's say that there is a Wal-Mart nearby, and even though not your favorite store, it is the only place where it is easy to fill out a household shopping and grocery list.

Let's say you go once a week.

Let's say that while there you buy just one box of 500 count .22, and one of 9mm value pack (and perhaps occassionally some hp's). Not a huge hit to the budget.

If you have been doing this for, oh, two years, you have now over 50000 rounds of .22, and 10000 of 9mm (plus the occasional hp box).

Now, let's say you have been doing this for about 8 years. Hmmm....just saying the math gets interesting.

When the power goes out, I look at my generator, look at my gas cans, think, "what if I am never able to purchase another drop of gas ever cause this is TEOTWAWKI?" Then I leave the gas and generator for when I NEED it and go back in and play a board game with the family by moonlight or candlelight.

Getting this back on the topic of ammo, if something bad happens (anything from local environmental disasters or government proposing we serialize and register all ammo all the way to invasion, revolution, or economic collapse) do you think you will find any ammo in the store and that if you do you will be able to afford it and get "enough"? Do you think ammo prices will go down much over time? Ammo keeps pretty well. What are the downsides to purchasing a lifetime supply right now? Sure you could have a fire, lose it all in a tragic boating accident, or have lost opportunity costs if the cost increases in ammo do not outpace what you would have done with the money had you not purchased the ammo in advance, but our firearms are worthless without ammo.

Dampness and heat would be the only two foils to that logic. Most people don't follow the manufacturer's directions about storing in a cool, dry place. Don't follow that, and your ammo stash can be worthless in a few years.

Cool dry place to store it in and you're golden for a long time.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

A buddy of mine buys silica gel packs and keeps them in his ammo supply and his gun safe, once a year or so he replaces them and he's is good to go. They only run around $5 each, pretty cheap insurance.

You can buy a big bag of silica kitty litter at walmart fot a few bucks.

1/2 a cup tied in a cheese cloth or panty hose will keep your ammo can dry as a bone. Use this in my safe and humidity stays under 50%

cool thing is you can reuse the silica. In the oven at 250 for 2 hours and its good as new.
