I believe there is a mechanism technically where you can apply for that particular purchase at the store (basically just like applying for a PTP but on one specific gun) in essence you are putting that gun on lay-a-way until it clears, but I have not heard of a local retailer willing to allow that option. Most will send you on your way to your police precinct to get your PTP.
So why do you not want to get your PTP? It is the same process and same amount of time.
