Full Auto Ownership Law ..Can I get one?

Postby VikesFan1 on Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:18 am

Is it possible to buy a fully automatic gun from a private party? How do I proceed? I need a special license, is this correct? Is it worth the trouble?

If anyone can point me to the answers it's appreciated.

I'm curious my self, I think it's only $200.

The only thing holding me back from checking into it more is the fact that full-auto guns are so damned spendy. Once I get my kidney paid for I'll look into it.

C&R FA only in MN.
Old Stens that are on the list,
Reising
Thompsons,
Grease guns
M2 carbines
They all must be on the list, they might be a little more expensive than the ones that aren't on the list, as far as I know they must all be original.

That google search turned up a bunch of bad info actually. I'd be far more trusting of some of the opinions here over a generic google result.

Okay, I'll try to be a little more helpful.

Is it possible? Yes.

Is it something you can afford? Probably not.

The federal tax stamp is $200. The guns are upwards of $10k.

The guns, as one would expect, vary greatly in cost depending on condition, history, desirability etc. To get a sense of cost, look at http://subguns.com and click on their classified ad section.

Because we are limited to C&R guns, our supply is more limited. About the least costly is a WW2 submachine gun called the Reising Model 50. It is a .45acp SMG, fairly fast rate of fire, very accurate in single shot mode, and about $3/second to shoot in full auto mode. :)

The Reising had a dismal military history, primarily due to its need to be kept fairly clean, and in combat situations that is, well, problematic. But...as a range gun...mine has been superb. Cost is in the $4000 neighborhood. Parts are fairly plentiful for the items that need service from time to time (firing pin and spring sets primarily) and it is a very easy gun to take down and work on for DIY'ers. People that know me are not surprised that I am not much of an amateur gunsmith....but, tackling the Reising is a snap...even for me.

I often let people in my classes shoot it...it puts a huge grin on their faces. I have a handout that I give to folks that shoot it... you can download it from

http://shootingsafely.com/reisingmodel50.doc (an MSWord document)

Way cool....way fun!

Even if you can afford the license, you probably can't afford the ammunition :-( Even if you load your own [and you probably don't want cast bullets for full auto ... if leading occurs, you could hit a high pressure situation VERY quickly].

I would just stick with semi-auto and learn to use the reset on your trigger [thanks for the tip Rem!] to fire rapidly. I have a 30 round magazine for a Glock 17, and my Brother and I were blasting away with that practicing using the reset point and it takes a lot to keep on target with recovery time so short. If you go to full auto on a higher powered rifle, you could blow away $30 in less than a minute and perhaps not even hit your target more than once or twice ;-)

In my honest opinion, autos are for renting. I suppose one could always have a semi-auto modified and avoid using them at a range, but I fail to see the benefit and the legal risk is high.

On the other hand, if you have the cash to burn and that is your thing, by all means get the permit, buy the gun and ammo and pay the range fees :-)
You could get a new lease on life -- if only you didn't need the first and last month in advance.

Reising SMG rate of fire is not that quick it runs about 500 RPM, a HK UMP runs a tad faster at 600 RPM, a Thompson is in the 800 RPM. Not like MAC 10 in 45 that rips them off in excess of 1100 RPM.
